If your son is still using the Windows 7 OS that came preinstalled by the manufacturer then you can just back up the licensing activation which automatically includes the product key. Use the ABR software to back the license up and when your son needs to activate the OS again after reinstalling just run the ABR software again to restore the licensing activation.

Is the laptop still on the original windows installation? If it is, you can use ABR: http://www.patchysan.net/images/thinkpad/ABR_17.zip to backup the windows activation. Note that this will only work on OEM installations hence my question as to whether it is still the original install.

I'm surprised he peeled it off, i mean it is pretty hard to remove and that should be a dead giveaway that it shouldn't be removed.

bah ha ha!...yes I know...I sorta flipped when he did it. its the original OS on the notebook. I am adding a new HD to it plus some more ram to make it more powerful and faster for him doing school work, and searching etc. Im adding 4 more gigs of ram to give him six, and im also adding a seagate xt momentus hybrid drive.

Then ABR will work just fine. Download, put it on a portable device, backup the activation to the portable device and restore once you'Re done with the clean install.

Alternatively, you could just clone the HDD to the new one if you don't feel like a clean install is necessary.

I prefer when manufactures put the COA sticker under the removable battery, it keeps it clean and out of the way.

As a point of information, even if you've already blown away the old installation, I've had success with calling MSFT and getting a new code. I had a retail install that I lost the key for and they had me read some stuff off the printed disc. Not sure what kind of verification they'd ask for for an OEM install.
