Default Missing CD ROM drive on HP latop

My laptop is a HP compaq nx9110 running Windows XP Version 5.1.2600.
The problem is my CDROM drive (Compaq CD-ROM CRN-8245B) does not appear in My Computer. When I do a diskpart & list volume command in cmd, the drive dosen't appear ever. In device manager I get this message
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Update driver does not solve the problem. I use a external dvd rw drive (LITEON EZ DUB) which I connect via USB but that dosen't work because I need to install the software from a cd for it to function.

It sounds like your drive is a IDE type drive and from the sounds of it the O/S or drive is bad. I would take out the drive and replace it with another IDE drive to see if it detects it and if it does then your compaq drive is bad. Beyond that you might have to make sure your service pack is SP3 for XP as that is the latest version beyond the updates. But that computer is a very old computer and it's possible the cd drive hardware is failing and needs to be replaced...

Yeah, there should not be any problem with detecting the drive and installing drivers for it. The drive is probably bad.

That was my first reaction, too

Some CD burnign software adds its own settings to the upper and lower filter settings...removing the line in the registry and rebooting often brings the cd back
