Can anyone folding with a 2920XM tell me what frequency you're able to run at consistently without throttling?

I can run at 2.99Ghz, but as soon as I bump that multiplier up one notch, I hit the temperature threshold where the CPU constantly goes in and out of Turbo. This happens somewhere between 80 - 85°.

I have the XE dual pipe heatsink with one tiny washer on top of each screw spring for a bit of extra compression.

If anyone will verify, it would be greatly appreciated.

you need to drop your temps....that is pushing it for 24/7 usage. Also is your TDP high enough? I would work on dropping temps before going higher.

Raising the TDP just makes the CPU able to achieve a higher clock, therefore producing more heat. During benchmarks and gaming, I can run at 4+ Ghz with no heat issues. It is only during Prime95, F@H, etc., where 2.99 Ghz is the sweet spot of frequency VS heat production.

If I lower the TDP, the CPU just throttles down to a lower multi.

I think I need to invest in one of the Ivy Bridge Triple Pipe sinks for the R2 like Mr. Fox did. Might allow me to run a higher clock without burning a hole through my CPU.

my 920xm is just not stable above 3.3 or whatever ghz. i think its voltage or the chip but oh well...just glad i can handle it in my crappy laptop lol. Well for the most part. i am keeping it 3ghz right now for folding and its 75-77C. otherwise its like 80C at max i can get it. do you use a cooling pad? I am going to make a custom one in the next couple weeks to have fans in an idle placement.

btw do you have fans at max speed? they might not be going fullspeed yet. if not than you can drop temps a good bit that way.

    Hey Turbod,

From what I remember when folding on my 2920XM cpu that is about the best you can do in terms of folding.
I remember if I didn't overclock or anything I was able to fold easily and stable at 2.8ghz without throttling.

If I overclocked and sometimes a little too much whilst folding I would notice the clocks go from 2.4ghz to 3.4ghz every now and again. I would notice when it would do this as well because I could hear the change in fan speeds.
So it was able to fold at 3.4Ghz however it was not fully stable and would throttle back to 2.4Ghz from time to time.
Heat was also an issue as during folding the CPU temps were always in the high 80s and 90 degree temps. I was folding like this quite stably for a couple of months. It did quite well as I was able to a mass like 5 million points or so.

I too would like to get my hands on some new 3riple pipped CPU HS so that I can try folding again.

So in terms of answering your question, I would say you have found the sweet spot of around 2.8ghz to 3.10ghz for where the 2920XM CPU can fold constantly without throttling. That was the range I found anyway where I could fold quite happily.

    Cheers.

is it throttling due to heat or something else? it seems weird to throttle like that..it acts like its not enough TDP or voltage

My TDP is set at the max BIOS setting, which is around 80. At 85°C the CPU temporarily bumps down to non-turbo clocks. You can also witness this happening in the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. The temperature indicators turn from blue to yellow. I'm guessing they eventually turn red as well.

I'm noticing that the CPU doesn't accumulate many PPD at all. Both GPUs average around 6K PPD, but the CPU doesn't score hardly anything. Should the PPD for a 2920XM be 300-ish?

Thanks for the help Chief and everyone. Mr. Fox says you can order the triple pipe heatsink directly from Dell by just calling and telling them the part number. I haven't done that yet though.

my 920xm gets 5-9k per day depending on what size the units are. Also have you completed 10 working units? otherwise bigadv wont count

    No worries Turbod,

I reckon its just the way folding affects the CPU and its ability to sustain higher OCs or higher clocks. I have noticed that it doesn't really make that much of a difference either going from 3Ghz or any higher say a few hundred more Mhz when folding is concerned. I had the 2820QM CPU folding as well at one stage and it was keeping pace quite well with the 2920XM.

It also seemed like pure luck that I would catch/fetch a bigger WU from time to time which would net me about 10k credits and take just under 24hrs to complete. Other times I would average the standard 4k - 5k credit WUs.

I'll have to look into trying to get the newer Heat Sinks somehow. Unfortunately it isn't that easy down under. I wish we had a special rep we could go to as well.

    Now the 680M looks interesting

    Cheers.

I thought you had to have an 8 core CPU running 16 threads to use the bigadv?

I could snag one and mail it to you. I'm talking to the rep right now. Don't know what kind of price he'll quote though.
