IE10 definitely feels faster already. If anything I think Microsoft is stupid not to push an update for IE9 that shows the improvements. People need to be convinced now (Chrome/FF 12 still feel faster)

You say that, but they're still advertising how "amazing" IE9 is on TV.

Now, you don't have to question my knowledge or what I understand. Have you tried out Win 8 at all? I've seen in this thread that you treat anybody who appreciates Win 8 as a jerk and a joke. As if only you know everything. I'm running the Win 8 consumer preview since it launched and am loving it. The metro interface is much more beautiful and functional than the Win 7 start menu IMHO. I can get my productive tasks done easily enough. All I have to say to you is that TIME WILL TELL whether Win 8 succeeds or not. Period.

Yeah, the utility and pleasantness of a user interface is ultimately a pretty subjective affair. It seems like the people who like Win 8 in this thread get that, and are saying "here's why I like it" or "here's why it's more efficient for me" without arguing that people who prefer Win 7 are objectively wrong. There seems to be a trend in this thread that the people who don't like Windows 8 are saying it's impossible for a power user to prefer its interface, and that's just plain not true.

I get that Pirx prefers the Win 7 interface, and that Win 7 is better for his uses. No question that's true for him. But I don't agree that's true for every power user.

I have it on one of my laptops.

I don't. I have a strong opinion about Windows 8, but that does not translate into any value judgments on people that use it, or even like it.
If somebody happens to like Win8's UI, that is perfectly fine. If somebody tells me that the only reason I dislike Win8 is that I am an old fart who is unable to stomach change, then I object. If somebody tells me that the functionality of Win8's Start Screen is identical to what we had before, I object likewise, and will point out that this is simply not true.

    Fine. And?

Beauty is a matter of taste. Perceived functionality is a matter of usage. There's a host of usage scenarios for which the Win8 UI is exceedingly ill suited, as has been explained at length before.

For myself and quite a number of others, Win8 makes it harder to be productive.

I am no fan of the metro UI. That said Windows 8 seems fine other than that. If my HP wireless printer/scanner worked properly I would use it as a primary O/S. I use Rocket Doc as my primary app launcher in Windows 7 and it still worked fine in Win 8 CP.

That said there are plenty of apps to help with desktop app launching etc. 99.99% of the time I never even touch the start button any more. So I did not miss it. Those still hung up on it though will undoubtably be upset. I would love to see M$ though come up with its own doc and not just the Metro UI.

Will I refrain from Win 8 because of Metro, Hell2TheNo, there is always more than one way to skin a cat.....................

Granted, their logic makes sense for tablets, but for their main demographic (the PC market) it just seems counter intuitive.
    This.

I sense a vista-esque flop in the making.

Although, if Microsoft puts windows 8 on tablets, where it belongs, that would work out.

But so called "Conventional" laptops and desktops? not gonna happen.

People like organized, easy, simple construction in Windoze Operating systems (which is why XP was so succesful and hence my name)

This, at least at the current time, doesn't appear to be the case for Windows 8, as it looks clunky with 2 different 'desktops' (the metro one and the 'old fashioned' one)

Why not have one, but a dedicated space for your useless oversized shortcuts? I mean, tiles.

    Sigh. Microsoft. Reinventing the invented...
