Default connect 2 laptops using wifi, win xp & 7, and partition

well... got a new laptop, I need to move some files, and I don't have crossover cable, google it and couldn't make both laptops try to connect... since I'm using windows xp and windows 7 64bit on different machines...

and by the way, what partition should I use for windows 7?

    thanks everyone

are they on the same network?
firewall disabled, or allowed for file sharing through?
can you ping the other laptop?
can you connect if you try \\ipaddress as opposed to trying the computer name?

What do you mean, what partition? what options do you have? I don't believe you have options to choose file system type during Windows 7 install.

    Create an ad hoc network.
Go into Network and Sharing Center.
    Click Manage wireless network.
    Click Add.
Click create an ah hoc network.
    Then click next.
then set network name, security type and key.

When this is done look for the WIFI network on the other PC and click connect. If it has worked you will be able to see your shared folders.

do what FredFlint said and also make sure you are on the same Workgroup and do not use homegroups (since they don't work with xp)

here's a nice guide on the topic:

thanks for the fast response, !
but, there's a problem, i don't have router... only wifi on both computer, and when I try to enter the password, it says something about bad encryption... I've been trying to do this, because I don't want to open my new alienware.... that's why i'm trying to choose wifi, since it's the best way in terms of efficiency and costs...
