Default Sync email between desktop & laptop

Just curious how everyone manages this. If you have a desktop & a laptop how do you sync the same email addresses between the two?

are they both on the same network with the same email settings? do u use outlook/outlook express/t-bird?? usually if they have same email settings, any changes u make on one system is automatically updated when u connect the other system to the network. this is what happens between my lappie and desktop at work. i use MS outlook.

Well, I use Exchange, which solves this problem. You might consider seeing if your email provider offers IMAP, that would also take care of you. Otherwise, there's no easy way to sync POP accounts that I'm aware of.

I'm using Outlook (I guess I should have mentioned that). I guess I could tell one computer to "leave the messages on the server" and the other one to actually download them off the server.

That is what I do however that does not really sync them. (sent items / deleted / contacts / etc..) My ISP only offers POP which as Brian eluded to there is no easy way.

I peridocially manually sync my contacts with export / import - you could do the same with your folders. You could also move you main *.pst file to the other computer (assuming versions, etc are the same)

I would not be surprised if there is some software out there that will do it though

get an IMAP account. Dunno if any free ones offer it, if nothing else 1and1.com offers lots of e-mail for only a dollar or two USD per month. or it comes free with web hosting.

I have work desktop, home desktop and laptop all access my two main e-mail accounts

I too use exchange so my laptop, work and home desktops, and web acess are all identical no matter what I do but yes inyour case IMAP is going to be the best option.

I have my own domain and can set up IMAP email if I want. I didn't know what IMAP was so I just did regular POP3. Are there any negatives to using IMAP? I just don't know the differences.

IMAP stores the mail on the server, and just downloads the headers for viewing. POP typically downloads the whole message when viewed, then deletes it off the server. I don't know of any disadvantages to IMAP, other than needing server space to store the e-mail.
