Default Delay between typing and its appearance on the screen Help!!

I'm having this annoying problem, hard to explain. Here it goes: when ever I type, (here in this message, or in MSWord or in Mail, everywhere), my system is sort of not responding in real time, I mean, is like I touch the letters and every now and then the letters appear "a bit later" on the screen. It's annoying because it makes me commit many mistakes while I'm writing. Is like if the cpu, or the HD "stops" for a very very short moment and then resumes.

My system is brand new (one week of use):
    Inspiron 1520 Core2Duo 7500, 2gb ram, Vista Premium, HD160 (5400rpm), Nvidia Gforce 8600GT 256MB, 15.4 inch WSXGA+.

I'm new to Vista but have tried to run "all possible" tests that I'm aware of, defrag, and even disable some programs from starting (I did this due to this problem I have). I only uninstalled the antivirus that was sent from Dell, and replaced it with AVG (free version). Other than that, I installed Skype, MS Office 2003, CCleaner and run vista updates and Media Direct updates.

Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks !!!

Vista can seem very unresponsive for the first few days while it does its housekeeping.

Clearly something is running in the background. You can use Task Manager to see what is using the CPU.

Is there some other application eating up your CPU? What does Task Manager show?

Thanks everyone. Indexing is off. Task manager shows so many things I don't know what can be shut down and what cannot. I have, for example, AVG resident shield twice (don't know if that's normal), and some other... I'm doing a selective "shut down" to see what happens .. so far nothing seems to fix this annoying delay between typing and its appearence....

I guess I need to find one of those sites for Vista "dummies" and start some serious reading. Can someone suggest one "for beginers?

Being so new this system, I'm also considering a clean install ...(altough that's going to be my last option!).

Well ... I've been typing for the past hour and the problem seems to be gone

I just removed these two services from starting automatically when I boot the computer (I have no idea which one did the trick):

    - pcmservice.exe (part of Dell media experience software)
    - updreg.exe (a process from Creative Tech. that reminds us to register their products).

Thanks for all your replies. This might help someone in the future...

Dude Gmora, we just bought a new dell laptop and it had the same problem!

I put "delayed typing vista" into google, this thread came up (the only one on the topic really) and your solution solved it!

    It was the file pcmservice.exe

    Thank you so much!

    (sorry for the topic revival)

THank you so much for figuring this out and posting it for everyone to see. I googled the error as well after receiving my new laptop from Dell and it delaying typing. I had two calls with Dell and the last one was to return the system for a new one, it is brand new, so this did not make much sense to me. I am going to send this info to dell. Thanks again!!

    OMG!

    Thanks for the pcmservice.exe advice!

I disabled it in the startup (from msconfig), and it fixed my "typing delay" problem that's been bugging me for quite a while.

    Peace.
