wi-fi IP conflict
I'm trying to get a friends computer to hook up to the wi-fi here at the hotel, but his IP address apparently conflicts with another machine. I once remembered how to release the IP address to get a new one, but not anymore. So how do I do it? Thanks for your help. guys! (and gals!)

The connection should be set to automatic. I doubt the hotel assigns IP's manually. The machine will pick up one that is not in use.

I would have thought so, too, but after reebooting his machine a few times, it still came up with the same IP address. Dunno. Oh well, the point is moot now, anyways, as he took off already. Preciate it.

It's a moot point now, but in case you need it for the future: drop out to the command prompt and type IPCONFIG /RENEW. That should release your IP and acquire a new one. One helpful hint that works for me when travelling; when you set your network information in Windows XP (assuming you're using XP), set the main config to Automatic and then setup an alternate config with your normal settings. This way, when I'm home, it uses my normal settings. But when I travel, it'll pick up an IP automatically w/o me having to mess around with anything else.

Yeah your assuming with ipconfig /renew that he was using dhcp and not trying to use a static address.
