I would prefer a laptop with the new Haswell i7 Processors, but i'm open to i5 also. and would like to keep the laptop as light as possible. i have looked into various brands such as the Asus, Apple, HP, Dell etc. but in terms of build quality I loved the apple, but i'm new to OSX so its a bit hard to access. i'm currently using an hp which is more that 5 years old.
the laptops i have looked at are
    HP Envy 15J005SE
Apple Macbook Air & Pro (both 13 & 15" models)
    Asus X550LC
    Sony SVF1531SAB
    Lenovo Y510P

I would like to buy it as quickly as possible but i'm willing to wait until feb end.

your 5-7 year expected lifespan puts you into better business class units, and budget may not allow that in your location. consumer laptops today, including the MacBook Pros are a 2-4 year nominal life and are much more a disposable laptop than older laptops from 4-10 years ago.

but with that said, of the choices you listed the y510 would be my choice but keep in mind it may not get you your 5-7 years and hopefully another can chime in with advice as I am not current on all the good consumer models.

also keep in mind the only major advantage haswell has over IB is the IGP, so in many cases if there is a gaming requirement a previous gen unit with a switchable GPU may give you many more options as well.
Lots of Macs, and lots of HP and Dell portable workstations plus a couple Panasonics and a Thinkpad or three.

just bumping this thread...to see if anyone can give further advise....
a bit of an update....I'll actually will not be doing any gaming...just surfing listening to music watching videos, viewing & editing (only small edits) of photos... and I would prefer something lightweight with FHD or above screen.
looked more into the Y510 and i feel its a bit too heavy....

I'd second what Kctech said. You will be best served by a business class laptop. You do have the budget, and as you aren't doing anything intensive, you might as well use it for something better built. Apple, Acer and Samsung do not fit into that category. Something like a Lenovo T440s or T540, Dell Latitude or HP Elitebook would be what to look at.
    P150HM | i7-2720 | AMD 6970m | 8GB 1600 RAM | 256GB Samsung 830 SSD | 1TB 7200rpm Hitachi | Arctic MX-4

some of the top Haswell Processors laptops that should be considered by you before you buy it are :
    HP Envy TouchSmart 15t
    Sony Vaio Pro 13
    Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus
    Toshiba Qosmio X75 A7298
    Acer Aspire V7 (Model 482PG-9884)

But then after having a look at your requirement i will suggest that you go for Sony Vaio Pro 13 as it is 13.3 inches, has an intel HD graphics 4400 and weight just 2.3 pound, which is the minimum of all the above mentioned laptops. It has some of Sony’s best image-processing technology. In the tread you have also mentioned that you intend to use it mainly for Web Surfing, Office and Productivity Software so it a perfect match for it. But then if you are wishing to use it more for the gaming thing (although you have said casual gaming) then don't go for it.

How about this hp envy 15 tj101-ex model. Specs in the pic attached

    It's approx $1,260/-
How is the build quality of the envy series in general nowadays?
Also I'm thinking of getting either this or the rmbp 15" with discreet graphics it's approx $2,950/- ( which can be paid in installments over 12 months). The Sony Vaio pro 13 is not available here. And the Lenovo y510p is too heavy and it's resolution is just hd.

The HP Envy 15 isn't particularly well or poorly built compared to other consumer notebooks. They're not bad, but as other people have said you're not going to get 5-7 years out of any consumer notebook. And since nothing you are doing requires the 4702MQ or the GT750m, you're spending a lot of money or specs you don't need.
