Med Student for a new laptop! <$1000 TODAY
I bought my last laptop a few years back after conferiing with the people here at notebookreview.com. It had some long-term overheating issues and eventually ended with this.
but overall i was happy with it while it lasted. So i'm back for some more advice! And i need to purchase within a couple of days.
1) What is your budget?
<$1000
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Any of these. Would like it light though.
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
USA
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
After the long term overheating troubles with my last hp, i'm a bit wary of them but open minded.
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
No.
6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Occasional Gaming (not a regular gamer but like to have the option to play when i get bored) /movies and the generic net/word processing.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Taking with me definitely.
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Not necessary.
Screen Specifics
12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer?
Dont mind.
13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?
Nothing with alot of glare.
Build Quality and Design
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not a 1st priority.
15) When are you buying this laptop?
TODAY
16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
I'd like it to grow old with me if possible :P But atleast 5 years would be good.Last edited by teehee; 10th September 2012 at 11:27 AM.

Re: Med Student looking for a new laptop! ~$1000
BUMP...
If i'm going to buy a laptop from the states i need to make a decision TODAY. My sisters flight to Australia is next tuesday night and any deliveries would be cutting it close without forking out the extra cash for express.
I've been thinking of getting the Sony S3 here i'm straying away from its 13' because i've heard the screen is a bit scaly.
i know Sony is usually a bit more expensive than the others so is there anything else similar at a better price? What are my alternatives?
reaaaally need some quick help guys!

I recommend these laptops (But its Up to you to choose)
1-Lenovo Thinkpad T430 (With Discrete graphics)
2-Asus N46v
3-Asus U46SM
4-Thinkpad EDGE s430 (With Discrete graphics)
5-Toshiba L850
6-lenovo z580
and finally i wont recommend buying dell or acer or HP with high processing values because they do get very hot
and for more information about heating visit Notebook / Laptop Reviews and News - Notebookcheck.net they do reviews with heat measurement like this review

Re: Med Student looking for a new laptop! ~$1000
the Asus U46SM looks a little interesting but i think i would still prefer the Sony. I almost went to check it out then saw it was charging me sales tax on top as well to send to my sister in MI >_>
Couldn't find much on the N46v..the gaming power on the others wasn't really comparable to the S3s so that put me off them

Re: Med Student looking for a new laptop! ~$1000
Here's a tip, to avoid state sales tax go with a retailer that doesn't charge it. Such as Amazon.com:
Amazon.com: Sony VAIO(R) SVS15113FXS 15.5" Notebook PC - Silver: Computers & Accessories
You pay something like $40 more, but you won't be charged sales tax and should result in higher savings. Amazon does 2-day shipping, so gets there fast. Other popular online retailers with no sales tax for Michigan are JR.com and BH.com.
