Looking for laptop with sunlight readable full HD display
I'm looking for a high performance laptop (quad core) with a sunlight readable 15" full HD (1080) display. Something like a Dell Precision M4600 or Lenovo W520. It does not need to be ultra-rugged, but semi-rugged would be okay.
Any suggestions?

Re: Looking for laptop with sunlight readable full HD display
A clevo with a matte screen could work. I haven't gotten mine, though, so I couldn't say how durable it was.

If you're getting one, take it outside on a sunny day and see if anything is visible on the screen. My experience has been that typical backlit LCDs completely wash out in sunlight.

Re: Looking for laptop with sunlight readable full HD display
What exactly do you want the "semi-ruggedness" for? If it is because you'd be carrying it outside every day and want it to last a few bumps that might occur along the short walk? A Clevo would be fine for that. Get the NP9150 from XoticPC.
I've seen my roommate's G55 in direct sunlight. It is not the same as in a dark room, but the screen is still readable. Heck, you could even game on it.Alienware M17xR4 | Intel Core i7 3610QM | AMD 7970m | 12GB @1600 | Crucial M4 128GB + 500GB @7200rpm | Killer Wireless

Also, what else will your usage of the laptop be? If you filled in the form below we could probably help you more.

However, in general, a matte screen would be sufficient to be 'sunlight readable', and a clevo 15 inch could probably easily swap out the lcd screen

Re: Looking for laptop with sunlight readable full HD display
It takes more than a matt display to make a notebook sunlight readable. You need high contrasts and brightness as well. The best outdoor displays and the only ones that are truly sunlight readable IMO are the Panisonic Toughbooks, which are sometimes 1000 nits in brightness. The 12.5" HP Elitebook 2760o and 13" Fujitsu 901 have decent outdoor viewable Hydis displays. The Fuji 901 is cery close to the kind of workstation that you have in mind, including a dedicated NVS 4200 GPU, and would be a far better outdoor device than a standard work station with a matt display. The down side is that it is a table and comes with a lot of stuff that you probably don't want, like a digitizer and touchscreen.

Re: Looking for laptop with sunlight readable full HD display
I thought I would try again to see if there have been any developments. Since I last posted, Getac announced the X500, which is a fully-rugged laptop with a sunlight readable HD1080 display. It exceeds my requirements for ruggedness, but it is rathe rheavy and expensive, so I'm trying to see if there are any other alternatives.
I'm looking for a high performance, semi-rugged laptop with a sunlight readable HD1080 display. The laptop needs to have core i7 quad core processor (or equivalent), 8 GB of RAM (or more) and 750 GB of rotating storage (or more). The laptop will be used outdoors (on or near the water) to run a computationally intensive application.
