    Gb Alternative to Lenovo Y580

    Hi all,

I've been waiting for the Y580 to be released in the UK before I bought a new laptop, but its looking increasingly like that will either not happen at all, or not happen any time soon. I can't afford to wait any longer. Can anyone recommend a reasonable alternative in terms of price / spec?.

    Cheers in advance!

    HP Dv6t quad
    HP envy 15
    Sony Vaio S15
    Samsung series 7
    Alienware 14x

All worth a look... all are slightly lower performance so it depends on what you need for gaming. if you need more gaming performance look at the sager and clevo offerings.

    Clevo P150
    Clevo P151
    Sony S15
    2.5 GHz i5-3210M
    Samsung 830 128GB SSD
    Nvidia 640m LE
    8GB of Ram

    Thanks for the reply!
Checked out a couple of the options. Im struggling to find the HP DV6t quad or the envy 15 anywhere in the UK at the moment but I will have more of a look soon. I do like the looks of the Vaio s15s but they do seem quite expesnsive. Same with alienware 14x. £999 might just be too much for me. I had a look at the Dell Inspiron 15R Se as well and thought that it didn't look bad.

I would actually be quite tempted by a Clevo build.. in terms of value for money they are the best I've seen so far. I don't know a lot about them though...

For example, through PC specialist I can get a build with GT650m, ivy bridge core i7 (6Mb cache version) for around £800.

My gaming requirements arn't actually too heavy since I'll mainly be playing blizzard games, and I am not really too worried about playing things at top settings. As long as its not a card that will be completely useless in a short space of time I am relatively happy.

Oh, one issue with the dell. I cant find any benchmarks for the graphics card!
Its got the 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7730M. Not a clue what that is like performance wise.

from what i can tell the 7730m should be roughly similar to the 640m... roughly

far as clevo goes they are a primary OEM for several major computer manufacturers (alienware, dell etc etc) but they also sell their own boutique line of laptops under their name or through resellers who usually rebadge/name them. Asus does the same thing but their own brand seems to be more mainstream. buying

clevo brand does seem to be some of the best value in gaming laptops atm. they have a pretty good rep for build quality too but im not sure about service since in the US thats normally handled by the reseller.

take a look at the clevo/sager subforum if you want more info

Thanks a lot, I will do. I think PCSPECIALIST - Custom PCs, Custom Computers, Custom PC, Desktop PC, Custom Built Computers, Gaming PC might be the best bet over here. (I think they are Clevos but I will check the forum. They seem to have a reasonably good reputation.). I have heard back from Lenovo now and they have confirmed that there is no planned release for the Y580 in the UK at the moment.

I think part of my issue in looking for laptops is that I dont know what has actually hit the market in the UK yet!

(Posted this in the Y580/Y480 thread but thought I'd post it here as well since I'm in the same boat as the OP):

I just looked on Lenovo's UK site and behold: Notebook computers - IdeaPad Y580 - United Kingdom (UK) | Lenovo | (GB)

Looks like the sales rep I talked to on the phone WAS talking BS.

This actually takes the P***. They emailed me YESTERDAY telling me that it would not be available in the UK and had no planned release. I had literally just settled on a Clevo build from PC specialist as well! Bah! Humbug! Not sure what to go for now!

Ok so basically my choice is now between the below pc specialist spec for £889 or the lenovo y580 at £999.00 (I think I would want the higher resolution display that comes with this model). No idea what to do now, was set on Y580 from the start but being messed about so much by the sales people has put me off slightly as I'd already settled on another machine. Objective opinions based on specs would be appreciated. Virtues of the 1gb GT650 compared to the 2gb GTX660?
