Ge60 vs y580
I am finally down to these two laptops so plz do not suggest a Sager to me. I don't want one. I'm comparing these based in specs not price. I need a laptop for college/enginneering/play games and have fun so portability is a large factor which is why I don't go for like a barebones gt60.
Msi
Pros
-matte screen
-able to customize from oem (thermal paste and hard drive caddy for optical)
-Looks cool
-good base 2 year/1 year accidental warranty
-ability to upgrade easier than lenovo but ally minor point
Cons
-no backlit keyboard (ugh msi! Why?)
-ships with 6gb ram but who cares its cheap and I can add 2gb for 15$ before if I want
-fingerprint magnet
Lenovo
Pros
-Maybe a 660m in it edit: not really a pro since I can put one in the msi now
-backlit keyboard!
-brushed metal finish
Cons
-won't be able to have upgraded thermal paste or hard drive caddy from manufacturer
-from the way the y480 is configured the higher hard drives are 5400 rpm
-only one year no accidental Warrenty
Equal
-processor
-close size/weight
-price is similar when configured
-fhd screen
Basically I think this comes down to wether I can live without the backlit keyboard or not as I really like the MSI but I really wanted that backlit keyboard. I can always get a external keyboard for my desk that looks all fancy though and the keyboard is steel steries so it's Good anyway.
Any input is much appreciated and thanks in advance
i think i should also say that i will be putting an ssd as well as keeping the hdd in both laptops. I know im losing the optical too but o well.

Re: Ge60 vs y580
with the lenovo you can upgrade the warranty to a 3 year on-site with accidental damage protection. you should be able to do it if you buy it somewhere else, but lenovo's website has that upgrade for $160 when you pick the computer.
you can also add an mSATA SSD to the lenovo, that way you can keep the optical drive and hard drive.

Re: Ge60 vs y580
Lenovo has a history of putting gimped gpu in there laptop for some awful reason. I would be surprised to see anything over a gt 650(if that). They put a gt 640le in ther y480 instead of the gt640(much better card). The Y570 had a gt 555 that was so gimped it was barely better than a gt 550. as long as nvidia keeps up with their deceptive naming scheme Lenovo will keep on jumping in bed with them. Go msi

Re: Ge60 vs y580
The ge60 is going to have the 660 as well. It is already listed on the msi site.
Also the ge60 is almost 1lbs lighter. Not sure that matters much.

Re: Ge60 vs y580
ill be reviewing the ge60 in a couple days when i receive mine. so i will let you know.
i personally didn't wait for the y580 because I took a look at the y570 in a retail store and did not like the design at all.Clevo M860TU - 15.4" WSXGA+/P8400/260M GTX/DDR3-1066 - Sennheiser CX300, Logitech G5, Enermax 250mm Fan Cooler

Re: Ge60 vs y580
Lol, they have pulled it from the site. Was still up last night.
GentecPc still has the specs up it was model MSI-GE60-0N-042US.
Hope they have not dropped this as it was the model I was
interested in.
Edit: Found it on the US site.
