Xotic pc supposedly has a month or more wait for any config with the 7970, so if time is an issue you might look at other brands. HP is currently shipping new ivy bridge/ kepler setups you might look there for a good gaming rig.

Well if your friend doesn't mind old computers there is always tiger direct lol. You can get some pretty good deals on last years tech.

I am not a particular fan of dell or alienware, but I have been told that it's a good alternative. The Asus-g74 would probably be a better option for gaming though, again last years tech but the ROG forums has just about every question you can think of already answered.

Can your friend not wait at all? A month is hardly a big deal compared to the power the 7970m will bring to his laptop. Also, it will last much more than any other GPUs.

The best thing about the g74 is you can max out the processor and graphics and it wont even get warm. The cooling system is amazing and the 1080p is nice. I used to have one but sold it, planned on buying the g75 but then the new dv6 came out ;]
