Default Need some advice to buy a new laptop.

    What is your budget?
    1.5k - 2k (€)

What country will you be buying this in?
    Belgium

What size notebook do you prefer?
    17inch or bigger

What brands do you like or dislike?
    Dislike:
    - Alienware (Have one now M17x and I hate it...!!!)
    - Acer
    - Toshiba
    - HP

Would you consider a refurbished laptop?
    No

What are the primary tasks you need this notebook for?
As a game and 3D developer I mainly work in 3D software (3Ds Max), so I have to be able to make heavy renders and sometimes a few at a time.
I also hold open as many programs as possible while working on my computer because I just HATE to close a program so I can open up another and just keep switching. So I probably have 3Ds Max open a few times, photoshop, visual studio and some other software

And ofcourse the possibility to play any game out there right now as high settings as possible.

What games will you be playing?
    All the games...

Where will you be using this laptop?
I will always carry it with me.

How many hours of battery life do you need?
No idea, never work on battery.

Will you be buying online or in store?
    Online or in store.

    Which OS do you prefer?
    Windows 7

List the screen resolutions that interest you:
    max res (1920*1080)

Is the laptops design important to you?
    No

Approximately what date will you be buying this laptop?
    As soon as possible.

How long do you want this laptop to last?
    3 years

How much storage capacity do you need?
    min. 500GB

it sounds like you would be a good candidate for something like the Sager NP9170 (which is based off the Clevo P170EM), depending on whether or not there's a decent clevo reseller in Belgium (there's three that I know of, but I need to look up reseller reviews before I could recommend anything). I have a np9150 (15" model) that has a ivy bridge i7 (3610qm) and the $100 upgrade to the nvidia 675m and it has demolished all tasks sent at it.

    Couple of questions:
    1. do you have to have nvidia cuda or does your work have ATI OpenCL compatibility? the new radeon 7970m is over twice as fast as the 675m and is only $100 more.
    2. how important is it that you purchase within belgium? is it much different to purchase from a reseller within the european union?

get the upgraded gamut displays as well as zero dead pixel insurance and you should be good. if you don't feel comfortable applying IC Diamond 7 compound then order that as well to keep your temps low so that you can max out your machine

edit: www.mysn.de has a reputation for being fantastic to deal with if you don't mind a german reseller. takes care of their customers and responds to questions quickly. I believe the corresponding model is an XMG P702 PRO. make sure you upgrade the ram (8gb or higher), cpu (3610qm or higher (you really want ivy bridge processors on this)), graphics card (radeon 7970m (2x as fast) or nvidia 675m) hard drive (i'd either buy a samsung 830 SSD through them or install it yourself afterwards, change the keyboard to belgian (which is free ), select a wireless card (i'd do a killer networks one) and finally add windows to it (64 bit, otherwise you can't use more than 3.2 gigs of ram) if you need a copy. if you're a student, you can probably get windows for cheaper through microsoft though. Comes in under your price limits for sure.

Hi, thx for the quick reply.

    Quick answer on your questions:
    1) ATI OpenCl compatibility isn't a must but would be nice!
    2) It's not important to purchase inside Belgium, I can always order online. But when ordering online I'm always a bit scared with service when something is wrong with the laptop.

I'll have a look at the models you adviced me with tomorow morning, as it is evening at the moment and I have to go away a.t.m.
But once again, thanks for the quick response.

mysn.de also apparently puts awesome thermal compound on their notebooks stock, so you don't have to worry about it. I configured a system that I would love and kept it in your price range including vat. shipping also isn't too bad.

no problem, i'd also email the mysn.de guys (or private message them on here) if you have any questions about them... as well as go through the reseller feedback forum. everyone seems to love these guys and that has got to be the lowest price on the clevo p170em in the EU, although I could be wrong. you can also write back here or PM me if you have any questions and I'd be glad to help.

    Hello,

I checked out the mysn.de website and the XMG P702 Pro and I have to say it looks good. I followed your specifications and made some small adjustements and I got the price range at €1900 so thats a good price for me.

Going to give a look at the sager now and see what price range I would get with that one.

But is it just me being blind or is there no way to put the website in english or dutch? Because my german isn't wht it should be.
