Default The Best Laptop for 3D Modeling and Rendering?

    Hello.

I am in search for some of the best laptops made to do 3D Modeling, rendering and animation.

I learned my lesson on NOT researching enough 3 years ago, when I bought my Acer Aspire 5251. It was a BIG piece of junk. Fell apart piece by piece. Long story short, it died 3 days ago, by having the power jack blow out. It stopped working, most likely from overheating. We've spent hundreds of dollars in fixing it. It's gone now. It was definitely not the right laptop for rendering and 3d modeling either. I will NEVER use Acer again!

Now that it broke, I need a new laptop and the RIGHT laptop for the career I'm pursuing.

I've done tons of research already, but I got very confused. Some of the articles were outdated with older laptops, but I want to know as of 2011-2012, what the best laptops are for 3D modeling, rendering and animation.

I am going for video and game concentration in college. So I will be working with Autodesk 3D Max, Maya, Nuke, Adobe Flash, Photoshop, After Effects and more!

Those are all big programs that require tons of storage space, a lot of RAM, a good processor and the fitting graphics card.

What laptop out there is the best for 3D Modeling, Rendering, Animation, Photoshop, gaming and video?

I don't care what the price is, as long as it's not too cheap. If I have to aim for $800-$1200,so be it!
As long as it's a good brand, has a lot of hard drive space, lots of RAM, a good processor and a good graphics card.

I just want to get reliable, quick and smooth rendering and 3D Navigation.

What laptop do you people recommend me using for my career? I need a laptop badly in order to succeed in college!

    Thank you for your time.

    - Justin

Probably a thinkpad w520 a quad i7 + quadro. Quadro 2000 may be a stretch for the budget?
I believe w520 is the only model that offer workstation card at your budget. also hit out the dell outlet for dell precision
It would help if you fill out the sticky form.

Some NBR post this today in another thread

Well, not much in that budget range. Dell M4600/M6600; Thinkpad W520; HP 8560w/8760w.

Try the Dell Outlet (Dell Factory Outlet: Error. Looks like there are a few at the upper end of your budget.

    Make sure you get a quad-core i7 - no i5s.

If I have to, I will go higher in price.

If the better laptops are more expensive, then it's worth a shot. I just want some of the best computers possible.

I would hate to go over $2,000 though.

Those specs look good but I would think you would want a larger screen. A larger screen comes in mighty handy when doing video editing.

You might want to re-think the screen "resolution". Just saying.

3D max and Maya .. if you plan to use these heavily skip all gforce and radeon cards, and DONT even think of intel graphics, go for biggest CPU and a workstation card ( I use a quadro 5010m )

photoshop 6, premier pro 6, ok ALL the CS6 suite no longer uses CUDA and moved to openGL. any GPU except kepler based gforce 600 series cards is good. Ati 7970 is by far the best right now ( accelleration is about 200% over 675 and which is the biggest of the non keplers )

now the best possible is the m6600 and 8760W. not cheap but really made for it. the w520 is nice but limited on GPU'S and a but small IMO.
on consumer side sager/clevo's equipped with 32gb ram, dual hard drives and a 7970 would be my choice even with the hit in maya/3dmax as if your doing that massive of renders I would hope you have access to use a rendering desktop with multiple cpu's

and yes anything for photo/video/cad/rendering work 768 resolution is bad if its attached to anything bigger than a 14" for quick edits or fixes
Lots of Macs, and lots of HP and Dell portable workstations plus a couple Panasonics and a Thinkpad or three.
