for that budget alienware might be a good option. the 17in vs 18in is your call. the 17in is normally for the 3d screen. the 18in for the dual gpu. if you were looking for dual gpu it is alienware...
if you wanted single gpu then the clevo P170EM would probably still work... it supports the XM processor and has additional drive bays...
...oh crap just noticed you put graphically intense 3d gaming, the alienware 17in is probably your best bet. Also for the 3d you should stick with nvidia GPU also... the 680M hasn't been released yet so matching your purchase time might be tough.

Graphic intense 3D gaming in the context of the form people fill out means normal gaming, not gaming with 3D glasses and 120 Hz screens.

To the OP, since you're getting into professional design, you should get a professional notebook, either a Dell Precision M6600 or HP Elitebook 8760w. The screens and GPUs offered by these models will be superior to most anything you can get in a consumer-level and gaming space. Plus, they will also be capable of gaming. While the GPUs are labeled as Quadro or FirePro, most of them are actually based on conventional mainstream and gaming units.

I dont mind waiting for the 680 to come out is that better than the new 7970 i think it is? and I dont exactly know where a 3d screen would best benefit me... the dual gpu is why I wanted to go with the p270... but now thats on hold.

Saturnotaku.... those are still on the lower end processors 2000....where as I would want something thats going to be still competing by next year
