Here's a question that may turn into a suggestion on the OS: can one install Windows 8 beta from scratch without a Windows 7 product key? If this is the case, I might eshew buying a Windows 7 copy and just install the 8 beta. I remember running a beta of Windows 7 on a machine for 6+ months with no problem, then bought a product key later. From what I hear, driver support, gaming and general usability on Windows 8 is very good on the beta...

    Please wait for the reviews.

The Sager NP6175/Clevo W170ER should squeeze in at around $1200. The higher spec machine would be the Sager NP9170. Check Mythlogic, Xoticpc, Powernotebooks, Malibal, etc.

I went to the newegg page for the MSI you have linked. That 17" laptop weighs less than 6 pounds?? Is that a mistake on their page?

Supposed to be around 2.7-2.8Kg. So yes, it is right. The 15" version is around 2.3-2.4Kg.
