Hi, this is my first time posting in this forum, and I am currently looking to replace my 5-6 year old laptop. I am currently torn between Asus G75 and Sager NP9170. Here are my thoughts on the two.

*Please note, I will be getting Ivy Bridge processor for both.

    Asus G75 Pros:
    - Design
    - Cooling
    - Keyboard

    Asus G75 Cons:
    - Nvidia 670m
    - Might be restricted to 1333 rams

    Sager NP9170 Pros:
    - Nvidia 675m
    - Better performance

    Sager NP9170 Cons:
    - Bottom intake-based fans and weaker cooling

I have a fear of over-heating and inconveniences due to concern for cooling. My previously laptop was nightmarish in that department. I couldn't dare to play games with it on a flat surface (usually angle it so that the corner with the fan is exposed), and had to remove a portion of the bottom casing to increase air flow when things eventually worsened. Otherwise I doubt I would consider the Asus G75 given Sager NP9170's specs. For this next machine I would like to play games for hours without worry, and occasionally have the option to do so on my lap or bed.

I don't think I will need top of the line graphics card for the games I am interested in. However, having a 675m would extend the longevity of the laptop in the gaming market. Plus I would like to be able to play some games without the low settings and still achieve a good FPS.

Hopefully someone with experiences with the Sager and Asus G series systems can provide me with some inputs. I am really looking forward to ordering my next laptop. =)

Thanks for taking the time to read/respond!

I'm in the same shoe as you. I am waiting till April 29th to order.

    I decided on 3 Machines

    ASUS G75

    SAGER NP9170

    MALIBAL's SATORI P170EM

I owned a ASUS G74, loved it, never had issue with noise or heating. It was too good to be true. Con was that 560M was too weak to play Battlefield 3. I was stuck on Med setting. ASUS g75 doesnt come with 675, only 670. Difference between those 2 cards are huge. About 25-30% improvement. SO I decided to stick with 675m to stay in the game market for awhile.

Now i'm debating between SAGER and the SATORI... both have 675M option for $1500~. Never owned sager or satori.... I wonder how it will feel compare to ASUS. I was totally amazed and blown away how well built ASUS g74 was.

I was just about to respond to your post in the Asus forum, but looks like you beat me to it.

I wished Asus would just provide the option to go with 675m, it would have made the decision a lot easier. The Sager P9170/Clevo P170em supposedly has a pretty good cooling system and feel to the keyboard (according to re-seller(s) I have spoken with), but I have also heard that the fan noises are like a hair blower on cool settings. That seems to be very loud to me, and I don't want to be forced to use my headphones whenever I play a game. The internal temperature is supposedly around 10-20 degree higher in a Sager when compared to Asus (90 vs 70). However, it is not high enough for concern.

While economically I am leaning towards the Sager. I also understand that the reason I want a gaming laptop is to have the conveniences while playing modern games. If I really needed a maxed out gaming machine for the bang of the bucks without other considerations, I would just get a desktop. I am just afraid that getting a Sager would sacrifice the purpose of a laptop for being able to play everything in high/ultra settings.

Haha yeah i agree with your input. I'm leaning more towards ASUS G75 with 670M due to the fact noise level and cooling level is just amazing. I have a ASUS G74 with 660M and I'm still impressed with it. Sager will have more elite video card.. and $100+ upgrade from 670M to 675M is definitely a dream come true.

I was talking with powernotebook rep... and he suggested that I go with Sager with 675M... if I dont like it.. return it and exchange for a Asus G75 with 670M. A hassle but I might consider that option.

Only if Asus G75 had a 675M option.... my life would be easier.

It's hard to believe what reps say something because they're trying to sell you the item. lol. I also did hear Sager gets really hot and have noise problem at times... which is a BIG turn off for me.

Can you show me your Sager build? I'm interested. Thanks.

I was looking at powernotebooks as well. These are the upgrades I selected beyond what was already offered by default:

    • i7 3720QM processor

    • GTX 675m gpu

    • 12GB/16GB 1600 ram (for VM)

    • 120GB SSD for second HD

The total comes close to $2000 with this setup.

I like it. Only thing I'll add if I can spend $2k is maybe a matte monitor. Haha lets keep in touch, I want to know what you'll end up buying.

I'm still debating... ASUS G75 or Sager NP9170..... choices... choices...

The Sager/Satori will run cooler and are less bulky than the ASUS, while offering superior performance. I don't notice much louder fan noise on my Sager than my previous ASUS. This is from experience of owning both in the last year, though not those exact builds.

You're the first one to say that. Pretty interesting. Everyone else says (including laptop shops) says ASUS is quieter by at least 10 decimals.

Can you provide the year model and build? I'm just curious.

ASUS G75 has a slimmer version this year.

Really? The new Asus G75 is slim as hell, the Sager models this year are bulkier than the Asus models this year.

The only thing that Sager has over Asus is price for performance. Asus costs more this time around because of its looks and size.
    Old laptop: MacBook (Late 2009) Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz, 2GB DDR3 1066 MHz Ram, GeForce 9400M
    Current: (5/30) P150EM, i7-3610QM, 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, AMD 7970M, Matte Screen, 750GB 7200RPM HDD

    P150EM w/ 7970M Review!

Yeah.. it comes down to 670M (ASUS) vs 675M option (Sager). ASUS is a lot cooler and quieter.
