Gb Need a laptop with good GPU, OR...

Hi all, my PC recently broke and my laptop is on its last legs. I work away from home sometimes and do a lot of my work on the laptop at the moment all my PC was ever used for was some battlefield 3 really. So I'm in the market for a new laptop.

    What is your budget?
    £500-900

What country will you be buying this in?
    UK

What size notebook do you prefer?
    Mainstream (15 - 16-inch screen)
    Desktop Replacement (17-inch + screen)

What brands do you like or dislike?
    Dislike: Mac

Would you consider a refurbished laptop?
    Yes

What are the primary tasks you need this notebook for?
Web Surfing, Office and Productivity Software, Video Chat and Conference, Movie Streaming and Viewing, Output Video to TV or Large Monitor, Graphic Intense 3D Gaming

Mostly extremely gigantic excel files. Watching / streaming movies and occasional few hours of gaming (Battlefield 3)

What games will you be playing?
    Battlefield 3, Diablo 3.

Where will you be using this laptop?
Will be used different places and Will stay on desk

How many hours of battery life do you need?
    2

Will you be buying online or in store?
    online or in store

    Which OS do you prefer?
    Windows 7

List the screen resolutions that interest you:
    Standard Resolution (1366 x 768)
    High Resolution (1600 x 900)
    Max Resolution (1920 x 1080)

Do you prefer a glossy or matte screen?
    Glossy or Matte is fine

Is the laptops design important to you?
    No

Approximately what date will you be buying this laptop?
    Around 03/30/2012

How long do you want this laptop to last?
    1 1/2 years

How much storage capacity do you need?
    250 GB

Are you interested in SSD for storage?
    Maybe

Do you want a built-in optical drive, what type?
    No

Now I'm not sure but I figure for my budget I will be hard pressed to get something that can run battlefield 3 (even on low settings) though I'm not massively familiar with laptops as I am with desktops. So if my budget can't reach a BF3 ready machine what are peoples thoughts on trying to build a eGPU (or external card) utilising the PSU and GPU from my now broken PC.

    All the best,

    Ben.

Your options would include the Dell XPS 17 with the GT555m which should allow gaming at low to medium settings for BF3. You can get 10% off using the coupon 0C03P209L07JS$ . A sample config would look something like this

2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM processor (2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz)
Microsoft Operating System English Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
    Memory 8192MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x4096]
    Keyboard Backlit UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
    Video Card 3GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M Graphics Card
Hard Drive 1TB (5,400rpm) Serial ATA Dual HDD - (2x500GB)
Optical Devices DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD read and write)
    Wireless Networking Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230 (2x2 b/g/n+ Bluetooth Combo Card)
    Cables UK 250V Power Cord

TOTAL :£836.09 inclusive of all taxes

You could also look at a custom Clevo laptop from PCSPECIALIST - Laptop-computers, Laptops, Custom Laptops, Gaming Laptops, Buy Laptop . You could salvage the copy of windows 7 from your PC and install it on the laptop. The build quality is good and the performance to price ratio is one of the best. They builders have a good reputation on this forum. Look for at least a GT555m on the Optimus II for decent gaming performance. A sample config would look like something like this

Optimus II: 15.6" Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
    Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2670QM (2.20GHz) 6MB
    8GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB)
    nVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M - 2GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
    250GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD2500BEKT, SATA 3 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
    8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
    Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)
    GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® ADVANCED-N 6230 (300Mbps) + BLUETOOTH
    2 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS AS STANDARD
    NO OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIRED
3 Year Standard Warranty (1 Month Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour)
1 Month Free Laptop Insurance inc. Accidental Damage & Theft
Standard Build - Approximately 5 to 7 working days
    £706 inc VAT and Delivery.

If you can wait for about a month or a little longer, you should be able to get your hands on the latest hardware from Intel and Nvidia/AMD. They will be introducing their latest generation hardware some time at the end of April.

My main concern with that is that the gt555m won't be able to handle battlefield 3 as well as I would like / that I am paying a premium for the name.

    What about something like this: MSI GT683-694UK Core i5-2430M 8GB RAM 750GB HDD NVIDIA GTX 560M DVD SuperMulti 15.6" W7HP (GT683-694UK) - dabs.com

    With a GTx560m

    Or this: MEDIONshop UK: MEDION® ERAZER® X6819 15.6" Laptop (MD97908)

    With a GTX570m.

    Aren't they substantially more powerful?

    All the best,

    Ben.

Idiot101, that was to the original respondent.

On the geforce website it says "Look for notebooks with a GT560 GPU or higher"

The Medion is the best deal at that price. But please read the reviews of the machine before deciding on it. The Medions are known to be extremely loud.

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

Those prices are great. Forget my earlier post about the GT555m.

Medion X6819 and X6817 are possibly the best price for the hardware .
But just you should know that Medion are not famous for their support , not so good monitors , loud , X6819 I think on battery drops GPU to minimum -not sure you could play realy intensive games .
As well I heard somewhere that you need to send the machine back to Germany if any concerns and you will pay for this .

About the new laptops - probably you have to wait till summer .

    Have a good luck !
