Now I'm not sure but I figure for my budget I will be hard pressed to get something that can run battlefield 3 (even on low settings) though I'm not massively familiar with laptops as I am with desktops. So if my budget can't reach a BF3 ready machine what are peoples thoughts on trying to build a eGPU (or external card) utilising the PSU and GPU from my now broken PC.

You could also look at a custom Clevo laptop from PCSPECIALIST - Laptop-computers, Laptops, Custom Laptops, Gaming Laptops, Buy Laptop . You could salvage the copy of windows 7 from your PC and install it on the laptop. The build quality is good and the performance to price ratio is one of the best. If you can wait for about a month or a little longer, you should be able to get your hands on the latest hardware from Intel and Nvidia/AMD. They will be introducing their latest generation hardware some time at the end of April.
Medion X6819 and X6817 are possibly the best price for the hardware .
But just you should know that Medion are not famous for their support , not so good monitors , loud , X6819 I think on battery drops GPU to minimum -not sure you could play realy intensive games .
As well I heard somewhere that you need to send the machine back to Germany if any concerns and you will pay for this .
About the new laptops - probably you have to wait till summer .
