I need advice!!
Hallo all,
First, thank you for your interest to read this post.
I am thinking to buy a notebook! but I have no idea about them at all.. some of my friends adviced me to buy a cintreno one but it is too expensive and it is more than my need as i think.
I am asking you to guide me to which speed of notebooks which fulfill my need and operate my applications properly.
I will use it for
1. presentations when I go to conferences or workshops. useally I use powerpoint for my presenttions.
2. I might use it for some applications like fitting date and plotting graphs and data analysis using different programs like(Origin) for my research.
3. maybe i need to use some programming languages like Fortan or C.
4. I dont need DVD or CD burner.. I have my own USB stick.
5. I will use it for internet and I like to use USB WLAN adaptor with it.
6. my finencial capability now is not a lot, so after four years i will be able to buy a modern one if i really will need it.
so upon the above mentioned boundery conditiuons of my use, which notebook of what speed you think it is better for me to buy?
Regards,
stranger

Hey Stranger,
There's just a few things you need to provide first before we can give you accurate suggestions:
1. What is your price range (max)?
2. Is weight/battery life a concern?
3. Are you concerned about heat?
4. If you're doing presentations on it, do you want a larger scree?
5. Are there any brands that you were looking at/don't want to look at?
When you provide answers to the above questions, we'd be able to suggest a few systems that will fit your requirements.

Hallo Venombite,
Thank you very much for your kind reply.
1. What is your price range (max)?
My price range.. ehem :&.. dont be shocked ok?.. hmm it is 200-300 Dollers, I am not miser
but this is my finencial limit.. actually I am hoping to find a one in such price in ebay.de so that I can pick it by hand from the seller after testing it.
2. Is weight/battery life a concern?
Yes, I like it to be a bit light.
The battery life for me ( at the moment and the next few years at least) is a not much concern, because mostly i will use it where an electricity blug is available.
3. Are you concerned about heat?
I live in a country where the four seasons are winter(s) but in different names
.. so I think heat is not of concern, (unless there are other facors which plays a role in that else than the weather).
4. If you're doing presentations on it, do you want a larger scree?
my presentations is done by a vedio projecter on a wall, but sure I like the screen size to be more than 13".
5. Are there any brands that you were looking at/don't want to look at?
No I am not looking for any brands, at the moment I only want a notebook, later when I feel myself wealthy and my needy for the notebook is more than my notebook's capability, I will buy a modern one with a good quality.
Thank you again for your last answer and I wish to read from you again.

That budget is very tough to work with. Would you consider waiting and trying to save up a few more dollars?

for 200 to 300 dollars, you will probably get a pentium 3. The only place I can think of to get one is eBay. You will probably need to save up. If you can get around 750 dollars, you can get a new inspiron 1000, which will be much, much faster. Desktop replacement notebooks usually have a minimum of 14.1" screen size, so that is no issue. Even basic models have over 2 ghz celeron processors, 14.1" screens, 256mb RAM, and 30gb hard drives.
GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x512 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120

Stranger,
I checked out eBay and they have a bunch of notebook currently listed. A lot of them are in the P3 range. I believe this may be your best option at this point. There are a few Averatec models listed that may be close to your price range. Also, the Averatec models are also fairly up-to-date so you may get a decent unit close to your price range.

It depends on what OS you're gonna be running. I'm just gonna assume XP. You should have at least 512MB for it to run well.
The best ones are usually the larger brands, HP (newer models after HP/Compaq merger only), Compaq, IBM, Toshiba. Older models for these brands should be ok. They were built a little more sturdy back in the days.
