Joybook 7000
Hey guys.
Just wondering if any of you have any idea on how much the price is for the Benq Joybook 7000. You know, it's the one with the 14.1 WXGA screen and has a 64MB Radeon 9700 and is under 2kg. Was also wondering if it's possible to add the memory of the graphics display. I'm a little gamer myself and would like to play Doom3 in its native resolution with 1-2 frills.
Next up, do any of you know whether NVIDIA will be launching their new Mobile Display Card to rival ATI's Radeon 9800? Not too much of an NVIDIA person but since the Radeon 9800 is ONLY available to Dell and Dell sells UBER HEAVY desktop replacements(Meaning over 3.5kg).
Also, since most of you here in the forum seem to have a bit of experience in the laptop area, tot you guys could tell me whether the Screen Quality of Laptops are significant to justify the going for them. e.g., Sony's Xbrite, NEC's Super Shine...etc
Thanx guys. Planning to get a laptop by next month i hope. Aiming for something around the lines of under 2.4kg, Doom 3-able, able to watch DVDs with a decent enough movie experience. Thanx. Money, wouldn't be TOO much of an issue,so long it's within reason.

Dexeaur,
Currently, BenQ is a very new player to the electronics industry in North America. They have been flooding the market with everything, therefore not specializing in one area. Their products are very low cost and only average in overall quality. Since they're new to the industry in N.A., no one really know how service and support is for the company. I don't think their notebooks are even available in North America yet, mainly only in Europe.
Regarding the new graphics cards, I don't think they're gonna be available until the holiday season, maybe Q1 2005. NVidia has the Go5700 which I believe is supposed to compete with the ATI MR 9700, but anything newer is not out yet.
Regarding the LCD's, it mainly a user preference. Many people say that there's too much glare, myself included, but other say that while using the unit, you don't notice it. You mainly get glare on the darker backgrounds, with a white background like in most apps & websites, you don't really see the glare. Others have mentioned that their LCD's are brighter on the bottom than on the top & some also stated that there's some leaking of the backlight. Not really sure what that is, but do a search for TruBrite and it should have a few posts about this.

It has been availabe for two weeks only and only in Taiwan. The MSRP for the T-03 (XP-P, M735, 256MBx2, 60GB, DVD-RW) is about $2082 (US Dollars), and about $1614 for T-01 (XP-P, M715, 256MBx1, 40GB, CD-RW).
The detailed specs are in the link:

Thanks guys.
Helpful info. I guess that would mean there isn't ANY existing notebook which fills my criteria (not for the moment) Sigh. Guess, I'll have to make do with an under powered one. Was planning on something not too heavy and game-able for a few years. Thanks anyway!

Well, have you checked the Sony S170 yet? You said money isn't a BIG issue and S170 is not that over-priced if you configured it right. The next two EXISTING choices in North America would be the IBM ThinkPad 14.1" T42 models and a customized HP NC6000, both with 64 MB Radeon 9600 and roughly 5 lbs. For home users, though, they are not really cheap compared to Sony and you have to hunt down the proper model on the web.
Oh, supposedly ECS is to start selling their 900 series in September with PCI-E X600 and is between 5 to 6 lb. Not sure if you care the extra 0.5 lb though. I'm really tempted to just ask my friend to buy the Joybook for me, but my wife likes the looks of S170 better. So...whatever makes you happy, dear.
