The Clevo x8100 is similar. 18", no RGBLED, 3 HDD support and nVidia 285M versus ATI 4870 GPUs.
The M17xR2 and the x8100 are the only two dual gpu+i7 systems.Last edited by Mandrake; 26th March 2010 at 09:19 AM.

Re: Alternative to Alienware M17x2
Any other gaming laptop? I mean, if it's not what you are looking for, then of course go somewhere else, but overall, this had everything I wanted.
Asus were all cheap plastic casings that felt kinda flimsy. I like the build quality of my M17x. Sure I could get a faster laptop, etc, but my M17x had everything I wanted in the right package.
It's really about what you want. If you are in an undecisive state, then that will take time to get over before you decide what laptop you are going to buy.

Re: Alternative to Alienware M17x2
Well, if gaming is your must - Clevo/Sager X8100 is close in performance, as Mandrake said.
But if you also need a professional graphics (eg. CAD), there are many potent systems (Dell Precision 6500, HP 8740w, Lenovo W701, etc).
If screen is the most important than I'd go with the HP 8740w(IPS) or W701 (Anti Glare RGB LED).Back to square one....

Re: Alternative to Alienware M17x2
I am a photographer and would also like to hear some suggestions about the screen.
I did some research. For screen the best are HP8740w (IPS), Dell Precision M6500 (RGB LED), Alienware M17x (RGB LED) and Lenovo 701 (REG LED).
I found Asus G73 is quite attractive. Did anybody compare G73's screen to the above? The price for the above are easy to over $4000 to get the same spec as G73.
I am using Lenovo T61p now. How the T61p's screen to G73's?
thanks,
JJCPA

Re: Alternative to Alienware M17x2
For photography I would recommend a mac, from personal experience editing photos using CS4 on a mac is nothing but smooth sailing. Plus you can't beat the build quality of a mac, solid aluminum body, plus the screen is one of the best I've seen. But I would wait for a potential refresh. Hear that it's coming soon and the macbook pros are going to have i7's :-D. But that's just my 2 cents
