Us Screen usable outdoors with day-long battery life

Per the subject, I'm looking for a laptop that would be usable outdoors (specifically that I can read the screen in full sunlight) and that has 8 hours or more battery life. Main use is for typing up notes and web browsing, but do other things like check maps and such from time to time. Ideally it has a hinge that lets the screen be pushed back until it's almost "flat".

A price under $1K would be ideal, but I'm open to other suggestions. I've considered the Fujitsu T2020, but I don't need a touchscreen, and the ULV processors seem a bit underpowered. I've also considered an Asus EEE 1000HE which I gather has one of the better outdoor screens for a netbook, but the 1024x600 resolution is a small concern.

    So, what would y'all suggest?

To get day long battery life, either you're going to need more than one battery (a few pounds of weight extra) or a ULV CPU/SSD/integrated graphics/small screen (which most tablets fit the bill for). The ULV CPU should be enough for most day-to-day tasks unless there is a specific program or task that you require more CPU power then you might have to go to a LV CPU.

    Thats not true necessarily.

A T400 can get 9-10 hours of battery life, has a matte screen which is good for outdoor use, and uses Processors as high as a T9800 (no crappy ULV processor).

Oh it also has discrete graphics, high resolution available, and optional SSD.

Find one for under $1000 at the Lenovo Outlet. If you configure a new one, I suggest the high-nit screen for optimal brightness outdoors.

I totally forgot about the high nit screen. +1 to the T400.

Once you add the Nit, the machine price goes over $2K, and I might as well get the Fujitsu T2020 then...

Don't suppose there's anything that's outdoor friendly and a bit cheaper? I did see that Acer has an Aspire Timeline 3800 that claims 8 hour battery life, a bit over three pounds, and supposedly a very bright screen. Of course bright and viewable outdoors aren't always the same thing
