Actually, the ABS might be a better choice for you, even though it does not use the Dothan chips. It is less expensive, has more system RAM, a larger screen, and the same graphics card. The IBM has only the 256 MB. If you figure in the $50 or so for another card, then your price comes to around $1950. You can get about the same thing form $1600 from ABS, and you are already familiar with their tech support and their "quirks." It amounts to a $350 jump for the Dothan and its 2MB L2 cache. The question is: Is it worth that much?

The original requirement was for a notebook under 9 pounds. In addition, ABS systems are no less reliable than any other manufacturer. I do agree and already conceded that IBMs are built like rocks, but the feature set at this price point leaves a lot to be desired. The screens are also of similar quality.

Oh, and don't forget that the IBM weighs 4.9 lbs while the ABS weighs 6.3. And the 14.1 inch screen takes up less real estate than the 15 inch on the ABS, and I would assume the IBM has a better quality screen. Anyways, for college students, portability and build quality should be priorities.

-You can get Dothan on the ABS ZForce F2 for less than the total on the IBM notebook Aleman has configured, plus 512 MB of RAM, not including a couple of other performance upgrades from the IBM.
-Reverend: what do you mean by "quirks"?
-I recently was checking out the HP zt3000 and X1000 Compaq laptops. With an educational discount I could basically get the same system though ABS, Compaq, and HP for about the same price, maybe a little less for the ABS. Given this the case, which company would be best to go with?
