Us Gateway P-173X FX -vs- ASUS G50V-A1

Tired of dealing with my outdated, 3 year old Compaq Presario M2000, I've started looking at laptops quite a bit. So far the Gateway P-173X FX and ASUS G50V-A1 seem to meet both my requirements as far as specs for gaming and music, and the amount of money I'm willing to spend. The ASUS sounds like a much more solid notebook, especially with 2 HDD's, better processor, and better screen res (while being even more portable at 15.4" than the 17" gateway).

So now I'd like to hear everyone else's opinions. My main questions are:

    • Are there any common problems with either brand that I should be wary of?
    • For anyone who's used the ASUS G50V, does the keyboard seem small or squished? It looks small in pictures.
    • 15.4" Widescreen -vs- 17" Widescreen ... 1680x1050 WSXGA+ LCD -vs- 1440x900 WXGA+ Ultrabright TFT Active Matrix ... Portability -vs- Size ... Which display is better for gaming?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Thanks for the tip, wasn't aware that Gateway was releasing another notebook already. Also, for any mods, please bump this to the regular "What Notebook Should I Buy" forum. I accidentally posted it in the school sub-forum.

    It's a 9800M GTS in the P7811FX.

I also will be purchasing the P 7811FX. So I clearly recommend it.

    1. I did not hear any complaint on Asus notebooks.
    2. The keyboard feels O.K.
    3. If you are a gaming player, Asus G50V-A1 is equipped with T9400 Intel Processor, 2.53GHz and 6MB L2 Cache, which is a much faster in speed and cache memory. If you really want a 17" WUXGA with a powerful VGA card, I would recommend Clevo M570TU (17") with 9800M GT or 9800M GTX which have much better performance than 9800M GTS. Clevo M860TU, equipped with 9800M GT, is also a good choice.

Umm ... first of all even though the Clevo laptop is better ... it will cost A LOT more money than the Gateway ... and also the 9800M GTS, GT and GTX have almost the same performance ... so it will not have "much better performance".
