256 mb HP zd8000 vs. 128 mb Gateway M680X
This post may have come up before, but I didn't find it. I'm having a difficult time deciding whether or not I should go with either of these laptops. I'm not really tech-savy, but have a general idea of what I want to use the computer for mainly for good graphics.
So I was looking at the video cards, and well, Gateway only offers a 128 mb x700 video card, while HP has the 256 mb x600. Which is better?
Besides video cards, which computer performs better overall?
The specs I was looking at for the gateway was the Pentium M 740.
Does the Pentium 4 perform better than the Pentium M ?
Thanks for any support you can give me.

Re: 256 mb HP zd8000 vs. 128 mb Gateway M680X
X700 is worlds better than the X600. The 256MB of memory doesn't help the X600, because it does not have a high enough fill rate to take advantage of it, so in reality, it can only utilize about 128MB.
Also, the X600 is previous generation techology. It is essentially a MR9700 with a PCI-e Bus. It has 2 vertex engines and 4 parallel pixel pipelines, where the X700 has 6 vertex and 8 pixel. Also, the X700 is better because it includes the latest generation VideoShader HD and SmartShader HD technologies.
P4 vs PM - Pentium M is much more efficent and produces less heat. A 1.86GHz Pentium M is about equal to a 3.00GHz Pentium 4. So, your best bet would be the Pentium M.
Hope that helps.

you are right about getting the X700 over the X600...but wrong about the 1.86 GHz Pentium M=3.00 GHz Pentium 4...1.86 GHz pentium M= around 3.4 GHz Pentium 4...which makes it more faster through the CPU

Yes, I did a bit of reading on the intel site, and actually, a Pentium M 1.6 (Sonoma) would be closer to a 2.8GHz P4, and a 1.73GHz PM would about equal a 3.00GHz Pentium 4.
