When I insert the CD that came with the Maxtor HD, it does not run. I called Maxtor customer service and was told to download the "driver" from their web site and they told me that "they do not support using their HD in external enclosure" and they don't believe it will work even after downloading (max3 drive or something like that). I know it works. I heard about other people using HD in external enclosure and using it with their ThinkPad. I need help. I invested too much on HD and External Enclosure and USB 2.0 adapter and nothing is working. Yes my IBM A31 thinkPad reconginze my USB 2.0 Adapater. What else am I missing? HELP.[:I]

    Perhaps it isn't formatted yet.

did you external enclosure come with drivers?

I'm using an 80gb western digital in my enclosure and it works with no problems, for most uses. There was one thing that it didn't and I had to hook it up to my desktop through IDE cable, but that was for data recovery not everyday usage.

    Tyusa,

This might be a stupid question, but it has to be asked. Did the enclosure come with an AC adapter? Did you plug the power adapter in for the USB enclosure?
I'm asking because some enclosures don't come with the AC adapters to reduce the cost, but enclosures that use 3.5" HDD's or CDRs, etc... require the additional power even though it's USB 2.0. This is the reason why I use notebook drives and an ultra slim external enclosure designed for 2.5" notebook drives. All that is required is the USB cable.
Check the adapter thing, and if that doesn't work try the enclosure on a desktop to see if it works. There could be a power/connectivity issue with the USB ports on your notebook (my old Toshiba can't use my external USB drive enclosure, but my desktop & other notebooks work fine).

You also didn't answer the formatting question. It will not show up as a drive if it's not formatted.

Think you, thank you again. I figured it out. The enclosure work OK, if I plug it directly to my IBM A31 ThinkPad and the it was recognized and formatted. The problem was the "CardBus USB2.0 Adapter". When I plug my enclosure to USB2.0 Adapter, it does not work. The USB2.0 Adapter does not come with AC adapter. I think that's the problem! Again, you guys are wonderful.Thank you for all your support. I could not get any help from IBM, Maxtor or the company that makes the External Enclosure. But I got all the help from you guys here. The BEST.[^]
