    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

    Likes: Dell, HP, Sony

Mainly except ACER it doesn't matter much till it gives me "value for money"

    5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?

    1. Web & Windows Programming (Main Priority) (at present m using Visual Studio, SQL Server 2005, vBulletin ,etc.. so need one tht can handle all this and the upcoming ones)

    2. Gaming (though not much but still would want a piece which can handle most of the games)

    3. Normal music & movies

    6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?

will be taking at most places, won't bother much if weight is somewht around 4 kgs (8 - 8.5 lbs)

    7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?

    8) How many hours of battery life do you need?

    normal, 4-5 hrs

wudn't mind tht, hoping tht it wud not be defective

    Vista

    Screen Specifics

    11) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?

    widescreen

    12) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

    Standard
    a. XGA -1024x768 - Large and easy to read text + graphics icons, but you fit less stuff on the screen.

    c. UXGA - 1600x1200 - Very small text and graphics icons, you can fit lots of stuff on the screen.

    Widescreen
    d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
    e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
    f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.

    anything in widescreen

    13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?

    doesn't matter much

    Build Quality and Design

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

    Performance is the main priority

looks & stylishness only to the extent tht it shudn't look real bad..

    15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?

buying it as soon as possible
the longer it lasts the better, atleast hopin to use it for 4-5 years

    120 - 160 GB

    17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive?

Dell Inspiron 1520 would be a good choice. You could also look at the Dell Vostro but it is slightly heavier.

Sony FZ series laptops are also capable machines. You could also look at Gateway if you're buying in the US.

Gateway has recently launched the M-6824 which is a notebook with a Core 2 Duo processor, dedicated graphics, 3GB of RAM and HDMI support for less than $1,000. Read the review at http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4149

And Gateway is now owned by Acer (acc. to the discussion regarding above laptop) so if not warranty, you might at least be able to get repairs fairly easily in India.

    hi all..

has made my mind to buy a customized Dell Vostro 1500 when i got a review from one of my friend tht its not upto the mark... and its just wasting ur money..

he told me tht he wud be surprised to see if tht model lasted for more than 1.5 - 2 years !!!

and as i have mentioned already tht i need one tht shoulf atleast last for 4-5 years (minimum), the more the better.

now wht he suggests me is to put my money in IBM thinkpad R or T series.. though the looks of thinkpad aren't gud at all but if it gives me "value for money", i don't have a prob..

so what do u suggest ??

pls. help.. my confusion is at the peak right now.. i m not able to understand what to do !!!

Hmm....If I were you, I wouldn't listen to your friend. IMO, Dell Vostro 1500/Inspiron 1520 has good build quality and I am quite sure it can last up to 4 years. Dont bother with it. Of course, Thinkpad, especially T series offers better overall build quality and more durability though it isnt eye catching at all.

For battery life, go with Thinkpad
For gaming, think again Vostro 1500 as it can be customised with GeForce 8600GT, while at same budget, Thinkpad only comes with intergrated GPU.
The choice is yours, think about that ...
