depends on the quality and complexity and desired speed of what you will be rendering.

You need a good processor, a decent workstation video card will work wonders though, but it'll just be faster marginally between high-end and performance.

does it matter if the card is openGL or not? most of these animation programs want openGL capable cards. thanks.

With your budget and needs, I would highly recommend to get:

Clevo M570U (a.k.a. Sager 5760, Aviator CX7, Rock Xtreme CTX, etc..).

Best 17" gaming notebook in its class for the money. No rip-off pricing like in other 17" gaming notebooks... Dell XPS, etc..

Its probably one of the more portable models for a 17" gaming/media notebook.

Reviews of this notebook (very informative):
    http://www.notebookreview.com/defaul...iew=Sager+5760
    http://www.notebookreview.com/defaul...review=WidowPC

    Specifications for $2000 budget:
    - 17" WUXGA (1920x1200) LCD
    - Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz)
    - 2GB DDR2-667
    - Nvidia Quadro FX 2500M (512MB DDR3)
    - 100GB 7200rpm SATA Harddrive
    - 8X DVD-RW

So as you can see, this is the best fully-loaded mobile graphics workstation for your budget. The Quadro card that comes with it is equivalent to the Geforce sibling ~ 7900GTX... which will easily handle any CAD, 3ds Max, Maya, etc... programs.

Check out the following sites for it:

.... and much more in the Clevo Guide

    Hope this helps,
    -Gophn

Ok i do alot of 3d work as well heres my sugestion.

All of the software out there works like this:
RENDERING - Is done by the processor. at least ray tracing is. so if you want to render alot then you need the best processor that money can buy so that it saves you a lot of needed time.

Actualy MODELING /vertex pushing - is all real time. this is where the GFX card comes in.

Im not sure about animation persay but i do know that it uses more GFX in order to move the vertecies but it uses the Processor to figure out how to move them.

I do modeling so i need a better GFX, also i work more on games then on movies (Im hopeing to get into the game industry after collage) so rendering doesn't play as much of a role in buying the laptop.

You may already know this but alot of people dont. so just for those guys that start to recomend stuff like the HP DV6500 dont exactly know what these programs need.

But i highly sugest you look into the Dell Inspiron 1520 and 1720. they seem like good notebooks for the job.

I agree with revoletion. You should watch an Inspiron 1520. Other option for design and animation is the MacBook Pro (17´´)

The M90 indeed is a good suggestion. It's probably the only notebook that can keep up with your demands. Or the ThinkpadT60 with a FireGL 5250 is worth consideration. I am not sure they are still in stock or not.
