I'd really rather have a Core 2 Duo T5200 for $50 more from HP.com instead of the Core Duo T2250. Maybe in the end that won't matter anyway though.Does this really make a noticeable difference in performance?

Also, I'd like to get the WSXGA+ screen instead of the standard WXGA+. (Another $50 upgrade.) though.Does this really make a noticeable difference in performance?

I'll be doing mostly school work, surfing, and mid-level gaming.

And then there's the whole issue of entrusting a financially troubled company to pay up on their big rebate.

Please help me out here, guys. Should I or shouldn't I go for it?
No, those are about the same (core 1 @1.73 vs Core 2 @1.6) - the diff beween them will usually be <5% so you won't even notice it. A significant upgrade is to the C2D T7200 @2GHz with the 4MB L@ cache (double the Core 1 and Core 2 T5000 series), but that's $200 more. I personally think the $50 extra for T5200 is pointless, especially here that this will prevent you from taking advantage of this great deal.

    A laptop probably won't last 5 years...

No computer lasts 5 years. The max you can get is 4 years, and that's if the only thing you really do is internet. Anything more and you WILL have to upgrade something in your PC. If you game, don't count on spending longer than 2 years with a computer, and please, please, don't get a laptop if you are "bleeding edge". You will bleed money buying new laptops too often!
    On order:

    HP dm3z 13.3" Thin-and-light: AMD Athlon Neo X2 1.6Ghz, 4GB DDR2 RAM, ATi Radeon HD 3200 (integrated) + 512MB DDR2 ATi Radeon HD 4330 (dedicated), 250GB 5400RPM HD, 802.11a/b/g/n, 6-cell battery

My main computer is a Windows 98 desktop that I bought in 1999 from CyberMax (long defunct).

I shudder to think what kind of computing experience you are having every time you use it. Frankly, its counter productive for anyone to be using such a machine that restricts your ability to efficiently do many things that are common today (multi tasking, java/flash/ajax web, modern apps, multimedia). At work I was using a 5 years old PC (P4 1.6GHz, 256MB), which was recently upgraded because it was getting to be too much of a pain to do even the basic stuff I use it for (office apps, email, intanet web apps). At home I upgrade my PCs evey 1-2 years (depending if I replace the CPU or some other hardware component).

I ahve a 4 yr old VAIO but the battery dies in 7 minutes! So I bought this HP DV 9207US and picked it up at COMPUSA last night. contrary to the reviews, IT DOES HAVE A INTEGRATED WEBCAM AND MICROPHONE. I bought $250 warranty from compusa, which covers for 2 screen replacements and 1 battery replacement in 2 years. IS IT WORTH IT? The sales guys said i can cancel the warranty within 20 days, but I ahd to purchase it lat night to be valid, which makes sense. I also read here i the reviews that COMPUSA is going out of business, so what happens to my warranty?

should I keep the warranty? It also covers for daily wear, Lightscribe writer issues BUT NOT ACIIDENTAL SPILLS

I know they closed several stores (which company hasn't in the last 5 years?).
I haven't heard anything about them officially going bankrupt.
You could always buy an extnded warranty thru HP. they give you up to a year to decide, I don't know how good they are? You could always do a search and see..........
