Are either of these good buys?

I am looking for a thin and light laptop for about $500-$700. I would prefer one smaller than these, but the laptops that are that small usually go for way more than my budget. Anyway, as far as specs and size goes, these seem to be okay. Not sure about how good gateway is, but the Sony VAIOs seem to be a popular choice.
What do you guys think of these laptops and their prices?

I think you can get an Averetec or Compaq thin and light for your budget.
Sony notebooks are good. I haven't any experience with Gateway notebooks, but their desktops used to be top notch, back in the days when it was Gateway and Dell were at the higher end of the spectrum.Last edited by Gautam; 28th January 2007 at 08:54 PM. Reason: missing past tense of "to-be" verb

gautam has a good idea with the Averatec:

It's a bit over your budget though, but is certainly the cheapest small laptop you can get.
Both of the laptops you linked are good deals for the money, but the Sony is much too big if you want to carry it everyday. The Gateway is a decent choice; also look for the Compaq V3000Z series.NotebookReview Writer & Reviewer

Re: Are either of these good buys?
I like the size of the Averatec very much. The compaq V3000Z is a great laptop and a great price, but slightly larger than I was looking for. I appreciate the suggestions. Looks like I'll just skip out on the sale for those two I listed above and keep looking.
by the way, if anyone wants those two laptops, the sale starts 01/30

Re: Are either of these good buys?
Thats a good deal on the Gateway; I would get that one. The Averatec is also a phenomenal deal, especially when it comes on sale for $699.
On a related note, does anybody know what the T2060 is? I thought it was a typo from T2050, but it seems to have a different logo and branding (Pentium dual core, versus Core Duo)rMBP15 | Adamo | W3J | W7Sg | Many More...

Re: Are either of these good buys?
The T2060 is really odd, I have no idea what it is and it is not on Intel's roadmap.
It's called the "Pentium Dual-Core". If anyone knows about this CPU please post.NotebookReview Writer & Reviewer

I really like the Compaq v3000z for your situation. It's actually little thinner and has a slightly smaller footprint than the Gateway. The Gateway deal is really not bad either.

Re: Are either of these good buys?
The specs seem to be the same as the CD T2050, but it seems to be a different CPU altogether. I Google-searched 'Intel T2060' and I saw that the Lenovo N100 had a recent BIOS update that gave it support for the T2060 and another new one, the T2350. Theres a lot of notebooks using this processor.
Ran across a Chinese page, and it appears that the main difference between the T2060 and the T2050 is that the T2060 only has 1MB cache, compared to 2MB in the T2050.Last edited by Redline; 28th January 2007 at 11:10 PM.
