Toshiba M100 (Core Solo & 256mb ram) TOO SLOW ?
Has anybody out there recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite M100 (Intel Core Solo 1.86Ghz & 256mb ram) & found that whilst the CPU can handle most applications, that the 256mb ram is ALWAYS "maxed" out ?
I know I have ! The 256mb ram is outrageously inadequate ! How dare Toshiba release a unit in July 2006 with anything less than 512mb !
I know I didn't have to make the purchase, but I have little experience with computers & have only learnt this since buying the computer. For example, my brother bought a Compaq Presario 3 or 4 years ago & it had 256mb ram.
As a result I plan to upgrade VERY soon. Does anybody know of the optimal configuration for this Toshiba Satellite M100 ? ie. I wish to upgrade to 1 Gb ram. Should I run dual-channel by using 2 x 512mb Ram sticks OR just grab a single 1 GB ram stick and run it in single-channel mode & add my 256mb stick to give a total of 1280mb ram. Which would give better performance ? The latter is cheaper to buy, BUT I am more concerned with optimizing performance.
Basically, has anybody with this model upgraded the RAM ? If yes, what did they do ? And, what were the results ?
Thanxz for any help !

more ram is better than dual channel. go with the 1 gig stick + 256 mb.

I'd agree, stick another 1GB stick in and it'll fly!
Also try uninstalling the bloatware applications it came with that you don't need.

How dare they release a laptop with inadequate ram? Not everyone can afford a machine that is going to perform beautifully...
Just because '3 or 4 years ago' 256mb was enough, doesn't mean it's still adequate today. In fact, that by itself is almost proof that it's inadequate for today's standards.

Hmmm, 256mb of RAM is enough...unless you are goin to play some games or do heavy picture imaging with it...But ofcourse the more the marrier
