Is it possible that its the built in harddrive protection that is freezing your lappy. I noticed that if I bump my lappy to hard, Toshibia's hdd protection hardware kicks in and freezes my lappy, but only for a few seconds tops. If your not bumping around your lappy maybe your hdd drive is failing. Is it posible for you to use the restore disks (hopefully you made them) and restore to factory settings. Maybe some software went off the rails, and wiping everything would fix the problem.

    Good luck.

I have tried it, and its close to useless. It makes keyboard extremely "mushy", and also leaves key prints on screen (since it touches the screen in closed state). So it went straight to the bin.

Thanks for the feedback Ingvarr. I'll probably pass on it too.

Another Question [and probably a dumb one], but when I get my replacement tomorrow, do I have to reburn my Recovery Discs, or will my current discs be OK ? [same model laptop; Qosmio q8102X].

    Thanks

Question about the Hybrid 4G Serial ATA drive in the 8104X:

Do I have to put specific applications onto this 4GB section of the drive or does it happen automatically? Also, anybody know if it is my C:/ or E:/ (default settings) drive that is hybrid?

    edit: does that make sense?

    Thanks in advance.

    No no no...

I thought the same thing as you, before I discovered what the 500 GB hybrid actually does.

There is not a seperate 4 GB SSD [partition] on your drive. What the 4 GB SSD actually does is act as a buffer and cache for the harddrive. This allows it to have quite a bit faster access speeds than a typical 7200 rpm HDD.

Here's a video explaining how hybrid HDDs work and comparing their write speeds to traditional SSDs and HDDs.

    Good stuff.

Also, any advice for how to maximize the fact that there are 2 internal drives? For instance, storing Program Files on 1 and music, photos, etc. on the other. Or just fill the 1st drive up and then move on to the next.

First...congratulations on your new laptop, (I just got my Q8104X last weekend and am enjoying customizing it)

Next, some suggestions on how to take advantage of the two hard drives.
Assuming c: is your 500Gb boot drive and d: is the second 500Gb drive

I like to separate code and data (it makes backups far easier) so putting all you installations on c: and then all your data on d: makes a lot of sense.
You can even move your my documents folder from c: to d:

Another good tip is to move your swap file off of your primary boot disk. This is less important with the amount of RAM you have, but if you do anything that is RAM intense and may cause you to grow your swap file to compensate then moving if off the boot drive can have a small but measurable performance impact.

Note: Myself I will be using the laptop for both personal and business work so I have partitioned the second drive (150/350) and installed a second copy of windows 7 (x64 Ultimate) on the smaller 150Gb then configured it so both of my dual boot OSes can see the 350Gb as d: but not see each other. That lets me do clever things like share my Outlook data file between the two OSes by putting it on the d drive, and ensuring I can get to critical project files instantly if a call comes in even if I am booted to the home premium partition.
