This is perhaps one of the most stupid questions I've ever had to ask on an internet forum but I just cannot find an answer to the query anywhere on the web. It's not often Google lets me down...

Being a recent proud acquirer of the M170 I've been using it for home theatre duties. In all likelihood it will be relegated to streaming as I'm installing MCE2005 to make use of the XBox 360 but I'm keen to find out how the hell to get DD5.1 sound out of the XPS.

I attached the Dell s-video dongle and ran a coaxial cable to my amp but could get no sound out of it. I wasn't using the s-video out as I'd rather run a VGA to a plasma screen (considering running DVI-D to HDMI but I've heard there are some probs with that...).

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

    Cheers.

you're running the svid out, but not any audio cabling? svid doesn't carry audio signal.

No. It's a dongle that has s-video out, composite video out and coaxial audio out. I'm running the video through the VGA port and trying to get the audio through the coaxial audio out.

i'm not too sure what you mean by dongle in that it's one cable with multiple connectors? the only audio output on the notebook is the headphone out. you need an 1/8 to RCA stereo converter. unless i'm totally misunderstanding you on the dongle issue.
