    Hi guys,

I want to get a new laptop only for work and I can't decide. The field of application is almost exclusively programming and using VMs and stuff.

As an operating system I want to use Ubuntu.

    I'm staggering between a DELL XPS 15 9560 and a DELL Precision 5520.

The big advantage of the 5520 is the direct Ubuntu delivery/support. Basically the XPS 15 is supposed to run with Ubuntu but probably needs some tweaks.

It concerns the following models/configurations (Germany)

    XPS 15 (1.798,99€)

    • 15.6 inches, FHD (1,920 x 1,080)

    • Intel Core i7-7700HQ

    • 16 GB DDR4, 2,400 MHz

    • 512 GB SSD

    • GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5
    Precision 5520 (1.980,98€)

    • 15.6 inches, FHD (1,920 x 1,080)
    • Intel Core i7-7700HQ
    • 16 GB DDR4 2.400 MHz
    • 256 GB SSD
    • Quadro M1200 4GB DDR5
Alternatively, both are also available with an 15.6 inches UHD Touch (3,840 x 2,160) Display.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what 4K support is like under Ubuntu and the most popular programs, so I'm not sure if it brings me more advantages than disadvantages in the end.

The price difference is not so deciding for me, what would be the better choice for me and my purpose? Or would you recommend another device (no 13 inches devices please)?

    Thank you very much

You do realize these are the same devices for all intents and purposes? Whatever works with the 5520 will work with the 9560 aside from the Quadro differences. I wish I could comment on Ubuntu but I can't there.

    Hi,

yes, the devices are mostly identical but there a some differneces.
At least in my country, the XPS 15 comes with a killer NIC.

I haven't heard much good news about it, especially under Ubuntu/Linux.

    What is about build qualitty?

Build quality is going to be the same. You can swap a wireless card. Really you should determine if you need a Quadro vs a 1050...

GoNz0 over in the XPS 15 9560 thread mentions the precision lines seem to have better quality control (9560s vary widely), as well as a few more options (SEDs, etc).
