First, is it normal that the battery for my XPS 15 9560 would just die without any warning? I normally use my XPS 9560 plugged in. Today, I briefly used it on the battery. When I plugged it back in, the orange battery light was flashing continuously, and I subsequently discovered that it would now only work when plugged in, and it would no longer power up with the battery. I ran the system diagnostics, and it said "battery was nearing end of usable life".

When I checked with Dell, I found that they do not have any of the 97W (part #GPM03) in stock. Is it safe to order a battery from Amazon, NewEgg, EBay, etc.?

Unfortunately, battery death isn't uncommon. Presumably li-ion lifespan should be about 500 full cycles. Premature death may come if the battery stays at 100% most of the time, operates at high temperature, drains/charges with high current.

    Dell customer irritation program...

Most probably, most of them are fakes. Try checking specific vendors, some of them seem to be Dell service partners that might actually have genuines. Otherwise better pick one sold as "compatible", preferably from someone appearing to be a responsible battery seller.

Thanks much for your reply and input.

After posting yesterday, I tried putting the 84W battery from my older XPS 15 9550 into the 9560. I was interested in seeing if the 9560 would boot with battery power. It did boot fine, but I got the message that said that the battery detected was not "a genuine Dell battery" (even though it is a Dell 84W battery) and that it would not charge.

Is there any work around that would allow me to use that 84W battery and have it charge properly until I can get a proper 97W battery?

Also, if anyone has any recommendation as to a source other than Dell where I can get the battery and be confident that it is a genuine Dell battery, I would appreciate that information.
