I'm looking to upgrade my Inspiron 9400 from an ATI Radeon x1400 card to a 7900 GS card. Does anyone have one laying around by chance? :)

I also have a few questions:

    1) I have experience working with hardware, but not much with laptops, would this difficult to replace the card on my own?

    2) How big of a difference would this upgrade make for my laptop (Gaming).

    Thanks!

    welcome to nbr
upgrading to the 7900GS is possible
Please note that you must also purchase the secondary fan for your system
The X1400 has only one heat pipe, which extends into the same vent the cpu heatsink occupies.
The 7900GS is like 3.5 x as powerful of a GPU, so it dissipates more heat. Thus why the 7900GS has two heatpipes and requires two fans to cool it.
    ATI X1400 3dmark 06 : ~1100
    nVidia 7900GS 3dmark 06 : ~3700

You may want to check Dell's website they sometimes sell the upgradeable parts , you just have to look for them.

Thanks for the quick response K-TRON.

From what I've seen from another forum that the 7900 GS has two versions, one with a single pipe and one with two heat pipes.
    Dell Part # UF814 - 7900GS Dual Pipe
    Dell Part # DG008 - 7900GS Single Pipe
Is this true? If it is, maybe only the dual pipe version is compatible with my Inspiron 9400?

Also, what exactly do you mean purchase a secondary fan? Does Dell sell that part on their site?

    Thanks!

Also found this from another thread.

As far as I know, the e1705 and Inspiron 9400 models are very similar, so maybe I would need the single pipe version of the card?

the inspiron 9400 has two vents on the bottom right?
I am almost 100% sure that the i9400's sold with the X1400 only came with one fan, and thats on the left hand side of your laptop.
When the i9400 was purchased with the 7900Gs, two fans were installed, one on both the left and right corners, to cool the graphics card.

This is the system with a 7900GS installed:

Actually, the 7900GS has one fan to the right of the laptop. I believe the 7900GTX and 7950GTX have two. I am in the process of replacing my 7900GS so I'm pretty sure of it. BTW, I recommend you getting your 7900GS on eBay, where you can find it for half the price that Dell charges.

    Hey iron eagle
if possible can you post the model information on your 7900GS, so that the OP knows exactly which one will work in his system.

Your right about the single heatpipe one, I remember now that their are 7900GS's which have only the one heatpipe and fan cooling it.

The Dell part number for the Nvidia GeForce Go 7900GS is DG008.

    Hi K-tron,

It looks like there are two fans on the bottom of the laptop. One on each of the back corners. After looking at the thread, it seems that I would only be able to use the single pipe 7900 GS.
