when i start up windows xp pro 32bit for some reason now it says that the windows firewall is disabled. When I try to enable it it wont let me. then a minute later it is enabled. It just started doing this. I am using avg. but i had it installed before it started doing this. Also how do i adjust the programs that startup on computer boot? thanks.

For the firewall, I'm not sure. Some of the security experts can help you out on that, I guess.

As for managing start up programs,
    - here, you can enable or disable programs from starting up.

You can also manage start up programs from other software' like CCleaner, for example. There is also a Startup Delayer if you want.

But before going ahead, I recommend reading through Les' Sticky Guide here in the Windows OS section. He takes you through msconfig and also working with services through services.msc (advanced!).

You may want to run a Malwarebytes scan. My firewall was doing the samething 2 weeks ago as well as turning AVG on and off and it was a trojan doing it. Malwarebytes killed and cured the problem.

How long it takes the firewall to get enabled after you start the system ?

Windows XP Firewall is not configurable so i would suggest you to get 3rd Party Firewalls like COmodo or XP Firewall Control
