    Hi,
I just used the drivers from dell site and the gpu drivers from the amd site. I did not install the nic and wifi driver, just left the ones windows intalled as the killer drivers gave me problems on win 7.

Goto the Owners thread for the M18. There is a link to the drivers for the R2 you can use.

Most of the Windows 7 drivers (including Alienware Control Center and OSD) work perfectly with Windows 8/8.1. In some cases the older Windows 7 drivers are actually better than the newer Windows 8/8.1 drivers. Honestly, I wouldn't even waste any time looking for Windows 8/8.1 drivers unless you run into a problem with one of the Windows 7 drivers. I suspect you won't have any issues. You will need to find an "airplane mode switch" driver for Windows 8/8.1 because the wireless switch was handled differently with Windows 7. (You will end up with an "Unknown Device" without it.) You can use the M18xR2 or Alienware 18 driver for that.

So basically I can just use the Windows 7 drivers package that I have right now to run Windows 8.1? And do I have to install both Windows 7 wireless driver and the "airplane mode switch".

And I found this "airplane mode switch" link, will this one work

You can use most, if not all, of your existing M18xR1 Windows 7 drivers. And, that driver in your link should most likely work for you.

Alternatively, if you manually select M18xR2 instead of using your Service Tag at Support.Dell.com, many of the M18xR2 drivers designed for Windows 8.1 will work for your R1. The audio drivers, USB 3.0 drivers and Free Fall Sensor drivers for the M18xR2 will not work correctly with the M18xR1 because those hardware devices are different.

Here is the link to download Alienware M18xR2 Airplane Mode Switch Driver from Dell Support.

Yup, you can do that. Most of them are compatible with Win8.1
