I restarted my laptop yesterday to install the Windows 8.1 updates from 05/09, and after the installation finished the laptop was unusable. As in the screen continuously flashed between the desktop and a black screen all while no icons, taskbar or desktop, where selectable. I restarted and restored (system restore) my computer via Ctrl-Alt-Del and then tried reinstalling the windows update again just in case that first install was broken somehow. Unfortunately, the same thing happened, so I restored the OS again this time deciding to deselect on of the four updates, to try and isolate the problem one. I did this for all 4 of the update files and unfortunately nothing changed each time. Thus I have to assume that some combination of the files is causing the issue.

So next I plan to install each update one by one to try and isolate the problem that way, but since the process is so time-consuming I decided I'd ask here to see if anyone else is aware of this happening. It's the first time I've had an issue with a Windows update to this magnitude so I'm completely baffled. I'll provide any further information if needed. Thank guys.

I highly recommend you move to Group B Patching. Woody Leonhard was kind enough to offer this strategy here: How to prepare for the patchocalypse.

By that I mean you should stop relying on the big monthly rollup that is offered to you and limit yourself to monthly security-only updates. They are not offered through Windows Update but you can get all the links and necessary info reading here: Windows 8.1 Rollup History.

For this month, it's KB4019213 and KB4018271. The 2nd one is needed only if you still have IE11 installed.
Try to install just the security rollup and see if you are still hit by the issue. If so, that would isolate the issue to some sort of mishap on the security side of your monthly rollup while the rest will be safe to install. If not, install the rest on your list, as in the .NET updates, Malicious Tool and Flash hotfix. Hide the 200+MB monthly rollup from now on and refer to the links above once a month during patch Tuesday to get your hands on the security-only rollup.
