    No Windows 9 Folks

    It's Windows 10

    "Preview Being Released Tomorrow"

"Starting tomorrow we're going to launch our Windows Insider Program."
"Technical Preview build for laptops and desktops."
Technical Preview build for servers will follow after that.
We're inviting our enthusiastic fans to evaluate it with us. We know they're a vocal bunch."
"We're planning to share more than we ever have before, frankly earlier than we have before."
"We can build a product that all of our customers will love."

"After the build conference, mid next year" for Windows 10 release.

    Start Screen in touch.
Essentially this is a mode that switches based on touch and keyboard input.

They said during the presentation that it "wouldn't be right" to call it Windows 9. Okay, I'm confused here. Why not? What am I missing? Seems like a pretty appropriate name when your last product was called Windows 8.

Edit: Hey look, it's OSX's Expose! Sorry, "task view."

Nitpicking aside, it looks like a really nice product.

Does it really matter what it's called?

Who cares what the name is.

Yeah, I saw this. So stupid. Unfortunately, the name change and re-branding are the biggest differences between "Windows 10" and Windows 8. They should have kept it Windows 8.2, because that is all it really is. All they did was un-delete a few things that were lost from Windows 7 - Windows 8, right? They are trying so hard to distance themselves from Windows 8, yet keep peddling the same OS with the same nonsense.

It better be 10/10 then. :p

But seriously, if it didn't matter to M$ what the name is, why did they go out of their way to skip the next logical progression in the sequence? Name it Thresold or whatever, naming it Windows 10 makes it way too obvious that they're trying too hard to separate themselves, at least nominally, from the notoriety of Windows 8. Even non-techy people like Grandma will be wondering where Windows 9 went.

Exactly, hopefully consumers don't fall for the wolf in sheep's clothing if this indeed turns out to be the case.

I think that getting rid of the ModernUI and putting modern apps in windows on the desktop, and adding new multitasking paradigms (multiple desktops, task view) is a pretty big change, much more than an x.1 change.

Where's the big change? ModernUI was introduced in Win8, nobody wanted it, so it goes. Multiple desktops is old, old, ooold hat, I'd be embarrassed to even mention that. Multiple desktops have been delivered with Windows systems for many, many years now. Task view? Yawn... So, where do you see the "big change"?

P.S.: This article (April fool's joke from last year) turned out to be prescient. Amazing really. "Windows 9 was simply too good to be true... :D
