I'm a little confused here... Yesterday, I got some alerts, saying that my computer is infected with Win32.Malware-gen. Then, today, another pop-up appeared, claiming that Win32.Malware-gen has been removed. Since I do not use an AV tool, where do these pop-ups come from? Should I be worried?
Any opinions and recommendations would be much appreciated.

Microsoft Essentials maybe ? (Windows Antivirus) If not, your pc may be infected with an auto-execute malware. You'd better install AV software before this virus becomes un-removable.

I actually had similar experience long time ago. I think that the first thing you need to do is to find out what the malware actually does by reading an article (type the name of the malware in Google and see what appears, like this one, for example). Then, knowing what you are actually against, I think the wisest thing to do is to do as MrDJ says.
I use Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials and I have no virus problems at all!
