Age old conundrum. Which OS to use with a CF31? Win 7 is less bulky but older. Win 10 is newer but more bulky...

Win 7 support won't last much longer. Win 10 still has a good bunch of years left before support is dropped. Not that it mattered with XP pro - most people just kept using it after MS dropped support for it.

Some sellers do not supply OS media so how readily available (legally?) is that material for people buying a used CF31?

Does Win 7 properly support SSD's and all the other hardware options that can into a CF31? Do all Mk's of CF31 get full and proper support with WIn 7 and 10?

Here's what I did... I loaded the Win7 from the recovery DVDs and then upgraded to Win 10 via updates. I wrote a thread on my experiences and how I did it. There was, as always, great comments by others in the thread also.

When you upgrade you will be given an option to carry your programs over to Win10 or to start fresh. START FRESH! If you feel the need for your drivers... There are still in the Util folder but are not installed. The first two CF-31s I loaded Win10 on... I fiddled with the drivers to get them all working. On the last one I left Win10 to control everything.

No it is not more bulky...

    Yes it supports SSDs

YES your laptop will operate faster!

As was mentioned in my thread... There is Windows Ultimate Tweaker to batten down the hatches to keep MS from running your life. There are also programs to put a Win7 face on everything... I went these two routes and love the end result!

Panasonic has drivers on their site for Win10 64bit for mk3 and mk4.

They all support SSD, but it is much better to install the SSD before Windows is installed. You can do an upgrade, but some tweaking is needed to reset Windows to use the SSD properly.

I setup Win10 64 bit on my CF19 mk6 with 8gb ram. Works great and uses the Win10 built in mapping program. I downloaded all the maps so GPS mapping works offline.

I agree with Toughbook. I ran a couple tweaking programs and gave it a Win7 look. Deleted all the Metro stuff. Removed all the spyware.

Yes it is legal. Buy it from here...

Oh wait you're unironically saying that. Let me laugh even harder, while working on my CF-31 with Zorin OS.

    BWAHAHAHAHA

Removing the spyware from Windows? Are you kidding? Windows is one big spyware.

Lol well CF31's unless they have the special extra stuff don't have cameras or mic's. Imagine that - buy used CF31 with webcam that has a brand new Win 10 installation, Turn it on, and the first thing you get is Cortana from Contoso University trying to talk to you and take over your computer.. ewwww.

I get the feeling that Win 7 Pro is really good and WIn 10 Pro is also really good if certain things are removed. Sound about right?

Re Zorin, that's a version of Linux. Linux is a far better OS that WIndows but is much less mainstream.

I like Zorin but prefer MX-17 released 12/15/17. Just saying, not trying to start an argument.

For several CF-31 (MK1,2,3) I loaded W7 SP1 then the driver bundle from Panasonic. Slight bump in the road with newmisc but ummmmm.....sorry I'm running MX-17 53J (speedracer with a ssd) need to start my 31S to figure out what I did. I'll look it up. edit (find newmisc, run pinstall bat as admin)end edit

Some of the 31s (MK2&3) use a different touchpad...Interlink Versapad...a PS/2 Mouse (Type) No issue in Windows but a possible issue in Linux. I'll pop a usb stick in 31S and see if they (Linux) fixed it yet.

    Cheers

That may be true, BUT the funny part is how much spying ANDROID does. And it is Linux based. Everyone is so afraid of Windows, but use their smartphones without regard to security and privacy.

And for every ones information..All those Win10 spyware devices have been retrofitted into Win8 and Win7 via"security" updates.
