Well they just killed the invite thing a couple months ago. Probably will be Beta forever being that they are always adding features and experimenting.

If it's in beta it means it's feature complete, and they're ironing out bugs so they probably have some bug ironing to do or maybe it has something to do with the infinite space you get.

It's in beta because they are not finished developing it. That is the meaning of beta software, no? :p

Ask Google if you want a specific answer. :D

I know what BETA means. :p The question was why is it still in BETA? 3 1/2 years doesn't seem like a long time? While my "because it is free" comment was meant to be facetious it does in fact have much truth. So instead of teaching me come up with the answer, so far mine is the best. :p Even if you guys said "because their making the best damn email utility ever" would be a better answer. ;)

It's in beta because that way Google has an excuse if problems turn up, or if they want to suddenly cancel it or, say, reduce the amount of space they give you. ("Hey, it was an experiment, and you were participating in a beta test. We never claimed it would continue in the exact same way")

Why should they take it out of beta? What would they gain? It wouldn't get wider appeal or anything, would it? Anyone who might be interested already use it, after all.

    Because BETA sounds cool

Nerd A: Hey guess what? I'm in this super secret Google BETA testing program...
Nerd B: (envies) No way! That's totally wicked!! What's it called?
    Nerd A: Uhhhh, JMail.
    Nerd B: JMail?!
    Nerd A: GMail (runs away)
