Make sure it's not muted in the Control Panel>Sound>Recording Devices.

It kind of sucks to start with.

Buying yourself a cheap external one will be a lot better :)

all the built in mics suck hardcore, $5 at wally world can get you something much more usable, but atleast its there in a pinch. You may need to turn up the gain/boost in the advanced sound control panel and just make sure its selected as your default device and not muted like D3X said.

I think nobody can listen to his own speech from NB speakers while talking to a NB microphone. Firstly you have to record your speech, than play it back. So particular program has to be used. Probably OP did not make it right

I tried that but there is just a very very thin line of green that appears in the line when trying to configure the microphone. This morning discovered the boost option which worked for a while then not anymore. Bought an external microphone which now works with sound recorder but not with msn!!! What's going on here? Thanks!

because no sound is detected in anything i try to record or in the configuration. The booster work slightly this morning but not anymore. No green line appears when configuring it.

In 'accessories' there is a program called 'VOICE RECORDER'
Try to use this one to record and play back your voice to check out your mice. It is possible that the problem is not mice but MSN configuration

Like Oldman said, make sure you have the correct device selected to record in Live Messenger. Still don't understand why the mic is so quiet even with boost on.

Go to the realtek audio control panel and check that the mic is turned on there.

if it sounds warbly (kind of like how things sound if you plunk your head under the water level in a full standing bathtub of water, not no noise but kind of well... wavelike peaks of noise that drown out your voice, and make your voice sound like a cracked out dalek..) then yes i can vouch it does this. i've tried sound forge, goldwave, et al to no avail. the input just seems like its got some massive interference and isn't being amplified properly even with up to 30db boost on and max mic volume. heck vista speech recognition either plugs away at consistently wavering green level and can't understand anything even if i shout, or a flickering below minimum that even shouting at cannot prevent it going to sleep with.

would recordings help anyone diagnose this ?
