I have Windows 7 64 bits installed on Asus G73JW. I cant safely remove any USB storage device. When I click the icon on the bottom left corner on taskbar, it does nothing. But it works as it should on my Gateway desktop also Windows 7. I tested different USB drive and external HD. Same result.

ayavskyo, IF you try to double click the 'safely remove hardware' or left click it or right click it does it do anything? Your instinct to use the icon is good IMO. Others have said as long as you do not have any files from the device your are trying to eject open (or explorer windows) it is safe just to yank out the USB device.
I also found this (I binged it)

If the bluetooth service does not help there are other suggestions in the comments section on that page.

Im not sure. I just got this about a month ago and I havent updated bios because I was told not to unless there is serious problem with the laptop.

Yea it does nothing. I knew that I dont have to 'safely remove it' in order to remove it safely as long as nothing is transmitting. But I was just concerned about what happen to it. It should work without a problem.

I have the same problem with my ASUS G73JW notebook with Windows 7 64-bit. Since I've owned the computer, I don't think I've ever been able to safely eject a USB drive without the "Device in use -- try again later" type error message.

The procedure described at the following URL has helped me to safely eject/remove the USB drive sometimes: Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device
