Which is the best antivirus solution for Vista x64? Have tried Symantec...

    Avira works great on Vista x64.

    AVG8 is solid aslong as you remove the LinkScanner and Email scanner options prior to installation

    NOD32 is probably the best (but it's not free), BUT never buy full ESET Smart Security v3x as except NOD32 antivirus the rest is average/below average ;).

    The last I read was that there really isn't a need for an AV on a 64bit PC. Reasoning is that the majority of viruses are written for 32bit OS.

    That is true, as with, you’re safer using Mozilla Firefox rather than Internet Exploder because most virus’s and "hacks" are written for it. But the risk still exists. I say just get Nod32, it's the best bang for your buck, just install and thats it for the basic user, don't really need to configure anything.

    Yup like others have mentioned, NOD32 is the absolute best, worth every penny. Avast is the best FREE version IMO ...but that's highly debatable. Norton is Dookie on a stick!!
