Everything works quite swimmingly with my m18x r2, but since I like to go for the fullest and have confirmed the information several times (mostly here), I would like to upgrade to a GTX 1070.

Since I often read about the card being too big and having several versions for several notebooks, I just simply want to ask which gtx 1070 is compatible with a m18 x r2.

Which one of these should I take?

1st is very expensive and off poor build quality, 2nd is likely the best that'll work but is also insanely expensive, and the 3rd simply won't work.

thank you kindly. i am properly better of getting a used one, maybe even the whole notebook for the sake of getting the graphic card.

I know this is a week old, but you need to get the first one.

The other two are non-standard MXM 3.0b form factors.

If you get the second one, you may need a heatsink modification just to install it. Very messy.

I got the first one, and it went straight in.

    thanks a lot.
Do you still need an unlocked Bios, or was it just plug and play so to say?

The first one has a habit of blowing up on people, avoid.

There is a "dell" type card that is on ebay of late and there has been lots of successful upgrades with it.

I would consider getting a 1060 or one of the current AMD cards for less money.

thanks. I already got an offer for the second one, with pictures regarding trimming.

Or I could simply upgrade my m17x r3 to r4 with one of these:

and then go for a gtx 1080 upgrade, but if I want to keep 3D I wouldn't be able to go higher than 880m(?). And then would the upgrade even be worth if it?

This annoying lack of support for stereoscopic 3D on the higher nvidia cards is causing unnecessary trouble for my upgrade strategy.

But alas, thank you for all the helpful information.

The 1080 will work, but will power throttle and will not yield an enjoyable experience. 1070 is the current best for the R4 until power limitations are resolved.

880m is the latest card to support 3D, but its a terrible card. OC 780m will be a better match unless you absolutely need the vram.

thanks. Then I stay with the gtx 1070 for m18x r2 as a powerhouse and 780m in the m17x for 3D.

    780m for 3D would still need the upgrade from m17x r3 -> r4, right?

R3 only supports up to 580m, with 3D in mind, if I remember correctly. And 580m is a known horrible card.
