You can also usually get a cheap copy from a college or university, assuming your a student.

MS Office will not become discount they just disappear back to MS. You can search for MS Office on the net and they will list which one they are. And they will only list the latest version like 2016 version. Unless your a University student that can verify this will you get a discount on MS Office or institution that buy MS Office then you might get discount through the institution otherwise your are the mercy of the online prices and big box store prices. MS doesn't off discounts on their Core Products only Students and Institutions get those discounts.

The web app version is like google docs in that everything is on the cloud, plus it has a limited set of features.

The paid version is the actual program, like it's been said before, if you are a student, inquire if your university has offers it for free to their students or at a discount. Even if they don't, look into https://products.office.com/en-ca/university, again, only if you are a student. Otherwise, your workplace may be participating in one of Microsoft's program where you can get a version of Office for your personal device at a lower cost. Otherwise, go for the basic Office 365 version or the standalone version where you won't get updates other than fixes to the specific version you have, but it will be a lifetime license not tied to a subscription.

Do you really need MS office? There are free alternatives like openoffice/Libreoffice, which could be sufficient for you specially if you need only word processor.

If you have a friend attending college, I bet they could get it for you on the cheap. College students typically get a discount for MS Office and MS Windows 10.

Put this way all other Clone Office say they are like MS Office so that should be more then enough info to see as to why MS Office is King of the Hill still. MS Office for the love/hate is the standard everyone wants to beat.

I always read "like MS Office" to mean that they work with MS Office files and can save to MS files and not so much that MS is heads and hills above everyone else.
TBH, Sharepoint is the only good thing MS Office has over the clones. All else is about the same.
